Question petronix electronic ignition and coil

alright I have another question for the forum. I am putting the coil distributer and all the fun stuff back on. Well the problem is neither me or the guy helping me knows how we unhooked it before we replaced the motor. I have a solid black that is hot when the key is turned on. Then I have a black/purple wire also going somewhere but isnt hot unless its on the coil on the negative side. Then we have the red and black from the electronic ignition hooked to positive and negative. The problem is when we hook it up there is no spark coming out of the coil. I am thinking I am missing something really easy or I am missing a wire all together. I am hoping someone has the answer.

Brian

black hot wire to coil positive. black /purple is the tach wire and goes on coil negative. pertronics wires red to coil positive, black to coil negative

If you hooked the hot wire to negative, without the resistance built into the coil to protect it, the pertronix can burn out pretty quickly. I've done it.......I hope you haven't too.

You can also burn out the Pertronix by leaving the ignition on without the engine running for, say, 30 seconds or so. And sometimes I think you can burn one out by looking at it cross-eyed...

Isn't this just an urban legend?

I would say Dave's concern is valid. Otherwise, why would Pertronix tout this feature in their 2nd generation Ignitor aka "Ignitor II"?

"Senses incorrectly wired Ignitor II or a “key left on” condition and shuts down the system protecting the coil and other components from damage. "

http://www.pertronix.com/ignition_products/ignitor_2.htm

My 2 cents.

they probably made the ignitor 2 with that featyure to try and dispell the myth that the ignitor burns out when left with the key on.
