Window lift thingy falling apart

Ok now for the technical stuff. What holds the two window lift thingys together. Should there be a screw to ceep them together. I am referring to the bowtie thing and its corresponding bowtie hole behind some springy dohicky. Mine keeps falling apart and my window falls down. (usually when rolling up) Thanks. Also thanks to the people who have posted on my carb issues.

What year of car? The window lift mechanism changed significantly for the 1973 model year.

It sounds like the later version, with the scissors-action lift. There is a rivet, I think, and a plastic bushing that can sometimes fail in those and then the scissors don't work. Not sure how to fix it in the car, except by getting a nut and bolt in there. You may need a very short bolt and a thin-section nut like a "jam" nut.

Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in here... I haven't had to mess with this myself so far.

Dave,
It is a 73 with the later lift. Should the hole go all the way through? If not can it be drilled? Is the metal good enough to tap or will it fall apart due to poor quality pot metal? Its in now with the window up so I dont have to worry about rain. (at least not through the window. Them 30 year old seals are another issue.)
Thanks for the help.
Also on the same right door the plastic door open thing on the door handle broke. I thought there was a metal upgrade for that part but I cant find it. I also cant find the rear trunk hindge that gets welded behind the battery.
Thanks again

I'm not certain on the lift... I'll have to see what I can find by poking around. (I don't have a 914 at the moment, actually.)

There is no pot-metal door latch cam that I know of. We sell a replacement plastic part. I think metal would not be a very good choice of material for this part because it appears as if there does need to be a little "give" to it.

The hinge repair piece can be found here:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/POR_9144_chasis_pg1.htm#item0
In your browser, look for the word "hinge" on that page. That's the RD repro piece.

Note that it's not a bad idea to put some additional weld around the threaded insert in the middle of the bracket, as the spot-welds in that have been known to break.

JWest Engineering also has a different hinge bracket setup, but I don't really know anything about it. A web search should turn up more info.

I had the same problem. Drilled out the rivet, tapped the hole and used a short bolt.

It looks like the hole would go through the spring on the other side. I have replaced the rivit 6 times and am tired of it. Can someone shed a little more light on the drilling of the lift rivit hole?

I have a 72 and my window crank on the driver side has been getting a little bit annoying... its just grinding inside the mechanism where the crank bolts on. Before it would work for about 180 degrees, but now its entirely done.. i know because it told me(with its grinding whenever i touched it). I think that its most likely the stock kind for the earlier years because it dosnt appear to have a scissor like mechanism,, more like a screw type(for lack of a better way to explain).
is there anyone whos selling the entire mechanism so i can upgrade to the later scissor like style?

by the way, its a 2.3L now,, i like it alot better then my 2.0, hydros now, and it revs to 6500 rpm! no more freaking valve adjs every other oil changes...

Generally, you replace the whole door when you go to the later window mechanism. If you want to keep your door, you'll have a lot of cutting and probably some welding to do to get everything to fit...

(PS--Don't let Raby hear you say you have hydros in there.)
