calibrating an MPS
 

Has anybody tried calibrating their MPS using an LCR meter?

Since a PO decided to adjust this, I need mine recalibrated. It holds a vaccuum so I think it is still good. I would like some feed back on whether or not this works.I got the measurments from

maybe somebody has a used inductance meter I can buy?

Geoff Bleyseng calibrates MPS's. Brad recommends the Wavetek LCR55 - I don't know what used ones sell for but you can buy new ones online for ~ $170.

Does it really matter what brand it is? I found one for ~$50.

How well does the MPS hold a vacuum? if it leaks down in 5 minutes its bad. I use the Wavetek LCR55 to calibrate them as thats what all the testing has been on and it works. Brad did alot of work to figure all this out and I don't second guess him.
You can also go to a dyno shop and pay them to help tune it to the proper A/F mixes but it will cost you more than the $170.

Well, my MPS holds a vacuum and I found a CLR meter at the local university. I'm going to attempt to calibrate it today. If it doesn't work..... then I'll buy a rebuilt one. Thanks for all the help guys. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Also, on the TPS, I'm not quite sure if it is good or not. I try to adjust as described on this website. When I hook up the Ohm meter, I don't get any reading until I've turned the TPS halfway. Does this mean it is bad? I've tried cleaning the contacts, but no change.

Are you sure you're checking the correct pins in the connector?

Pop the cover off the TPS and look at the traces for deep grooves. Its mostly at the very start of 'em that is what causes the problems. You hardly ever use the end of the trace just the Off idle part crusin around.
Don't buy the AA rebuild MPS's as they solder on the center stops to a diaphram. They don't have very good throttle response at all, more a on/off which sucks driving down the road.

Well, I calibrated the MPS and now it idles much smoother, but rich as hell. Backfire sounds like a shotgun and doesn't accelerate very good once it gets warmed up. Any other ideas?

You could send the MPS to someone with the correct equipment and knowledge to calibrate it correctly.

Geoff B from the above posts can do this for you for a small fee...and he is good at it...
