Hello,

In the next month or so I want to replace the progressive Weber on my 72' 1.7 with Duel Webers. I thick the 40 IDF's would be the best. I would like to know if anybody else uses them on there 1.7. Or if there is something better ( other than the original FI which I dont have). And how do they work in the colder weather. Any input would be great.

Is your mind made up on sticking with carbs? The stock fuel injection will give the best drivability and do the best in colder weather.

Thanks the stock FI would be cool but ealier owners took out alot of stuff, really messed it up it would be very expensive to get the FI to work again. But I would love to have it , if was cost affective.

There are aftermaket FI systems avail. Do a search on 914club.com for aftermarket FI.

40 IDA or IDF carbs have been used successfully on 1.7s in the past. Some people are real fans of the Dell'Orto family of carbs; they flow more for a given size throat and they evidently have better "progression" behavior going from idle to full throttle. But they aren't made any more and can be hard to get parts for . Dell 36es or 40s should work fine for a 1.7 if you can get them in good shape.

I prefer FI, but especially if you don't know what's in the motor already the carb setup is probably easier to deal with.

40's should be fine, with probably 32/34 venturis... which cam are you using? what's your CR? valvetrain stock? where do you live? what's your elevation?

those are questions you need the answer to to decide the proper jetting on the carbs. as for where to get some, John at Pelican (888-280-7799, ext 248) should be able to give you a good deal on some new ones, or CB performance. if you want used ones, try ebay.com or shoptalkforums.com, maybe thesamba.com.

My 1.7 is stock except for progressive weber and 009 dist. And I live in Eastern North Carolina Evevation about 100 feet. Should I look for IDAs or IDFs.

IDF's will be easier to find, and are gonna be fine for you. I'd use 115 main jets for your application, but your still never gonna get the proper mixture thru the rev range. In other words, you're likely going have a nice lean spot, but 125's will probably be too much jet for your engine.

Where are you in NC? I'm from up around the Greensboro area.

Great thanks for the info, even with a lean spot it should be better than the prog weber ever is. My only worry is cold mornings.

Cold mornings it should fire right up with the slightest feathering of the throttle. It'll more likely be after the engine is at full operating temperature that it requires full throttle to fire.
