max tyre size
hi guys,
i'm fitting a subaru flat 6 (eg33) engine into my 914, and i was wondering what was the biggest tyre size i could fit into the fenders, knowing that i want to keep rims diameter at 15in. and no flares. and what would then be the rims' width. looked all over the net for it, but couldn't find find anything substantial. thank you |

I'm not sure that the engine installed will effect you but my car is running 205/50x15 on 15x7 wheels. They have a special offset to allow the tires to fit without fender mods.

You need very close to a 5" back-spacing (on any wheel!) to fit 205-width rubber under stock 914 rear fenders. The fronts are much less of a problem.
205s on 7" wheels are very very very "iffy". I would not be surprised to find that Rob's car has had the rear fenders pulled out a bit in order to fit that combination. (Next time I see it, I'll have to peek at the lower corners of the quarterpanel to see if there are any of the gaps that are usually caused by this process.) Then again, since all 914s seem to be just slightly different from each other, his car may fit them without even that much modding. I believe that standard 15x6 Fuchs wheels (from a 911) have good odds of fitting 205s under the stock fenders. Note that some (relatively few) 914s do not really fit 205s under one rear fender or another; you will need to check your tires to be sure. The rear fenders seem to be a little "off" from each other, so you really do need to check both sides. --DD
