This may be a silly question but, here goes. My goal is to create a mid engine 911. Can a 914 be converted into a 911? I know the wheelbase is slighly different, but couldn't I use 911 fenders/quarters, decklid and bumbers, then modyfy the rear targa glass pillars?

i'd start with a 911 and convert it to mid engine....it would be easier to manipulate the mechanicals than doing the bodywork needed to "mask" the 914 body which is basicly what it sounds like you want to do..you want the mid-engine handling of the 914, yet you want the looks of a 911....personally, I'm not embarrassed to own a 914 :)
I'd also follow some of the steps Ron took with his car...get rid of the trailing arms, the 914 trailing arms would be a PITA to adapt to the 911 chassis and the 911 trailing arms wouldn't work due to interferance with the newly positioned engine....I think the Boxster rear suspension would be the hot ticket....tons of room for large tires to be mounted under the body work and a proven design
