Something to chew on for Friday
Well, for those who think these are cheap cars, I can attest that they most certainly are not. Here is a list of my expenses to date. Caveat: I did minimal work myself, ergo most of the labor can be backed out (not transmission work though and probably not painting).
History is that the car was purchased as a completed conversion. PPI had it absolutely rust-free (thank god), with popping through the carbs, grinding in first, good paint and a nice interior, and some stupid 911 oil tank in the trunk. And the right rear fender needed to be pulled a bit, since the tire was rubbing. I liked the car and overpaid but figured maybe an additional 10K would make it perfect with an additional 2K/year upkeep. Um, I was wrong. I am still hoping on the upkeep though. Enjoy. Well, you've made me feel a little better. Misery loves company :)
|
I couldn't even think of doing that....ignorance is bliss. right?
|
You mean keeping a tally? Yes, ignorance is bliss. It was pretty disturbing to learn I broke 60K.
I think I better go get insurance on some agreed price. I am sure AMICA would give me 3000 if I wadded the thing. |
I learned that it is important to keep the reciepts, but I also learned, NEVER total them up. It is so disscouraging and only makes you feel bad. And, if your wife finds out, its all over. So for those of you doing restorations, remember this, keep the reciepts, but never total them up. Otherwise, its not that fun anymore.
It makes that 20k for Seans car look a lot more attractive too. You could not build a car like his for anywhere near that amount. Something else to think about. |
Have only had my car for 5 months and have a nice little pile of receipts,
They will never got together with my calculator. |
For that price you could have replaced everything on the car twice. My first impression is that someone took you to the cleaners.
What is hairy dog, and how did you spend $13 grand there? |
Suspension, brakes, engine work, steering, HEs, transmission, etc. You know, stuff. He is a good guy, they are our PCA tech fellas.
It would have been a bunch easier just to find a motasixta. |
Then again, you could have just ordered one from Porsche and it would have been about the same price. Probably would have taken as long too.
|
Never total them up!!!!
Just the thought of the total cost for the restoration and upgrade of TWO 914s scares the hell out of me..... That total would be uglier than MikeZ's A$$........ |
That's alot of work done to one little car.
But one hell of a cover story for where the money really went. Hope it left a smile on your face. Hairy Dog? Cyberspace???? Can we all agree that the AA reciepts = one good screwing? |
They'll be time enough for counting....
All those with weak dispostions should turn away now. $58,085.11 |
Hey. I TOLD you it was 60K! Did you think I was KIDDING???
I know, I know. It's absurd. Hairy Dog = Hairy Dog And they are trustworthy. Honestly, AA was, in my experience, also. Cyberspace was for a pair of Sparco seats and tracks. And yeah, it puts a great big smile on my face. |

DAMN.... You could buy a new 911 or Cayenne for that price. But then again, we are the type or people who actually know how to open the hood on our cars. I stopped and helped a lady in a Black Cayenne S yesterday on my way home. She had a flat, and didn't even know where the spare tire was kept, much less how to change it. |
I don't know. I think I would have spent $20k - $30k on an early model Boxster and $8k on a clean CA 914 2.0. $24k was classified as service, and although high, every classic car needs service.
Sounds like you have one damn nice 914 though! Any pics? |
When I bought my 914, it had a 3/4 inch pile of reciepts.
Now the pile is about 2.5 in thick. I have NOT compiled a cost per inch. |
No one believes me when I tell them my 914 cost more than my Boxster. Doing one of these cars right cost a lot of money... especially if you are paying for someone else's labor. In the end if the car lives up to your vision of it then it is worth it. You can't take it with you.
|
Now see, that's exactly why I don't keep track of that type of thing. Ignorance can be bliss...
Thanks, Kevin |
The payback to all the work and money spent comes when you finish the car and you drive it.
Like Rick's Alien or Zois' Manfred, we each start with the same pallette, and we each create a unique work of automotive art that shows off our inner thoughts and hopes and dreams. We all cannot be automotive engineers, but we can be automotive customizers. What we end up with is priceless.... its a tribute to our dreams that we can touch and drive. Unlike the brand new Boxster or Corvette, there is no one out there with one exactly like it. And having a car that I can say "I built that" is worth more than a new Carrera GT or Ferrari F40. The owners of those cars show off their money, we show off our skills. |
Keep the paper work but never ever ever think about adding them all up..... Its a Bad Thing :(
|
Those numbers are scary! Maybe that's why I'm single.......ya think!;) .......then again IF I had another income in the household I would be thinkin SIX !!:D
|

The cost to a running car, which it was the day before, was more in hours than dollars. About 1000 hours. I won't mention the exact cost as he is selling it, but let's just say a lot of the asking price is for the six and the ancillaries. If anyone says I can't build a 914/4 ready for the track for around 10K, hand me the money and I'll show you a car 1000 hours later. AFA dreams, well I had a few wrapped up in the 914. But, what I've learned over time is, if you dream in one hand and crap in the other, one is sure to be full. |
60 K for a hobby ride..
I'v been trying to guess what Larry does for a living to allow such an extravegant lifestyle. :)
I've come up with a couple of ideas. A. Budget planner for the Goverment B. Procurement agent for the Pentagon C. NBA player D. Bill Gate's stock broker E Intellectual Property lawyer ;) (just jokin witch ya Larry...hope you ain''t offended none ) |
It's true, I give Bill stock pointers all the time. He never listens though.
In a month or two it will be nice enough that i will finally take some pics of the car. I figure I might as well. As far as the car, well, a divorce tends to make you look for diversions. I guess I needed a big diversion. |

F. Pimp Just kidding Larry.;) |
A couple of years ago, I bought a '70T that the prior owner had converted to a widebody 2.8 RSR replica. The receipts that came with the car totalled about $2K less than I paid for the car. The receipts did not include his purchase of the 911 before the conversion nor labor (he is a mechanic that swapped labor).
Having both done conversions (i.e. the RSR), bought/sold conversions (i.e. 914-6GT based upon a '70 1.7), and various 914s used to feed a racecar, my experience has been that its usually cheaper to spend a bit more for a clean, mechanically sound car than the cheaper "fixer-upper". That is assuming that what you are buying is, or is close to, what you really want. Just my two-cents worth. Unfortunately, I also keep speadsheets on each of my vehicles. I try not to look at them too often - the totals add up pretty fast. |
Wow, $60k??? And I was feeling bad about have put about $16k into mine... It does tend to make a 914 owner never want to sell. The money and time we put into these cars will never be returned. My receipt pile is quiet large too. I don't think I will ever total it. It's not like I can use it a tax deduction. Sigh......
|
Quote:
Ya know smooth you just gave me an idea..... If my doctor could prescribe a 914 as an anti-depresiant maybe I could deduct it !:D |
Well $60k would be a depressant to me. Better make that appointment Schosh...Keep us posted. :)
|

But to get back to $$ and the thread subject....the stuff ads up. I got the best prices I could....negotiated every price and swapped and traded did the install work myself with the help of a local 911 friend....I still will only break even at the asking price. BTW....1000 hours x $50/hr (this is a LOW shop rate)= $50K.... |
That's exactly right. I was going to ask (read, point out) the wage issue. If you do it yourself you do it for love. If you have no TIME to do it yourself, you have to pay someone shop rates. And it gets really costly, really quickly.
I think its worth it though. |
