Something to chew on for Friday

Well, for those who think these are cheap cars, I can attest that they most certainly are not. Here is a list of my expenses to date. Caveat: I did minimal work myself, ergo most of the labor can be backed out (not transmission work though and probably not painting).

History is that the car was purchased as a completed conversion. PPI had it absolutely rust-free (thank god), with popping through the carbs, grinding in first, good paint and a nice interior, and some stupid 911 oil tank in the trunk. And the right rear fender needed to be pulled a bit, since the tire was rubbing.

I liked the car and overpaid but figured maybe an additional 10K would make it perfect with an additional 2K/year upkeep. Um, I was wrong. I am still hoping on the upkeep though.

Enjoy.

You mean keeping a tally? Yes, ignorance is bliss. It was pretty disturbing to learn I broke 60K.

I think I better go get insurance on some agreed price. I am sure AMICA would give me 3000 if I wadded the thing.

I learned that it is important to keep the reciepts, but I also learned, NEVER total them up. It is so disscouraging and only makes you feel bad. And, if your wife finds out, its all over. So for those of you doing restorations, remember this, keep the reciepts, but never total them up. Otherwise, its not that fun anymore.

It makes that 20k for Seans car look a lot more attractive too. You could not build a car like his for anywhere near that amount. Something else to think about.

For that price you could have replaced everything on the car twice. My first impression is that someone took you to the cleaners.

What is hairy dog, and how did you spend $13 grand there?

Suspension, brakes, engine work, steering, HEs, transmission, etc. You know, stuff. He is a good guy, they are our PCA tech fellas.

It would have been a bunch easier just to find a motasixta.

Then again, you could have just ordered one from Porsche and it would have been about the same price. Probably would have taken as long too.

Never total them up!!!!

Just the thought of the total cost for the restoration and upgrade of TWO 914s scares the hell out of me.....

That total would be uglier than MikeZ's A$$........

That's alot of work done to one little car.
But one hell of a cover story for where the money really went. Hope it left a smile on your face. Hairy Dog? Cyberspace????
Can we all agree that the AA reciepts = one good screwing?

Hey. I TOLD you it was 60K! Did you think I was KIDDING???

I know, I know. It's absurd.

Hairy Dog = Hairy Dog And they are trustworthy. Honestly, AA was, in my experience, also. Cyberspace was for a pair of Sparco seats and tracks.

And yeah, it puts a great big smile on my face.

DAMN.... You could buy a new 911 or Cayenne for that price.

But then again, we are the type or people who actually know how to open the hood on our cars. I stopped and helped a lady in a Black Cayenne S yesterday on my way home. She had a flat, and didn't even know where the spare tire was kept, much less how to change it.

I don't know. I think I would have spent $20k - $30k on an early model Boxster and $8k on a clean CA 914 2.0. $24k was classified as service, and although high, every classic car needs service.

Sounds like you have one damn nice 914 though! Any pics?

When I bought my 914, it had a 3/4 inch pile of reciepts.
Now the pile is about 2.5 in thick.

I have NOT compiled a cost per inch.

No one believes me when I tell them my 914 cost more than my Boxster. Doing one of these cars right cost a lot of money... especially if you are paying for someone else's labor. In the end if the car lives up to your vision of it then it is worth it. You can't take it with you.

The payback to all the work and money spent comes when you finish the car and you drive it.

Like Rick's Alien or Zois' Manfred, we each start with the same pallette, and we each create a unique work of automotive art that shows off our inner thoughts and hopes and dreams. We all cannot be automotive engineers, but we can be automotive customizers. What we end up with is priceless.... its a tribute to our dreams that we can touch and drive. Unlike the brand new Boxster or Corvette, there is no one out there with one exactly like it.

And having a car that I can say "I built that" is worth more than a new Carrera GT or Ferrari F40. The owners of those cars show off their money, we show off our skills.
