New pump, no gas
Ok, here's my dilema. My old fuel pump on the '74 2.0 leaked really bad so I got another. I just put the new pump on, dumped 1 gallon of petrol in and threw the ignition switch a few times to get her pressurized. Cranked it over and nothing. Opened up the test port on the fuel rail and.... bone dry. I can hear the pump running, where my gas going??? I checked electical connections to the pump and fuel line connections also. I have the line from the filter going to Suction, the line with the Y connector going to Return and the other line coming from the engine compartment going to Damper. Is this right?

Went back out there this morning, I rechecked all my connections and they are all correct. I loosened the the hose at the Suction port and gas started flooding out- so the pump is getting gas. I tried running it by bridging 30 & 87 on the relay, opened up the line off the return port in the engine compartment and no gas. Wouldn't you think if the pump is running it is pumping? And if it needs to be primed wouldn't the gas draining into it from the tank be sufficient?

It takes some time; I replaced the Bosch FI fuel pump in my 308 a few years back, took so long to prime the system I thought I was going to run the battery dead.
Keep turning the motor over, you will get there as long as everything is connected properly.

Are the electrical connections on the pump plugged together the right way? Do it backwards and I believe that the pump will spin backwards...

Yes electrical is all correct, I've checked I don't know how many times. I should also clarify, the pump is new to me but it's a used pump. Billy Whitsides suggested perhaps the cover with the ports is on the wrong way...

Mark, When I replaced the pump on my 911 with CIS the pumped sucked up the gas immediately. I know CIS is not EFI but I would think that if gas is gravity fed to the pump it would pick it up and spit it out. I'm afraid to run the pump too long w/out gas running through- might burn it out.

Ok, I took the pump off, connected it to 12 volts, hooked 3 fuel hose up to each port. I filled the suction hose with gas, turned it on and is pushed all the gas in the suction hose back out. I have the electrical hooked up right also. Any ideas?

Either the cover (and spacer) are on backwards, or you actually have the electrical hooked up backwards.
Is the paint on the screws holding the pump cover onto the pump motor still intact?? --DD

Electrical is good. There is no yellow paint as on my old pump and the screws look as though they have been removed. Anyway I just put the seals from the new pump in my old one. Perfect. Thanks everybody.
