What Is A Really Nice 914 Worth??

Hello,

I just bought a 914 and I got home and I was just amazed at how nice it really is...I have owned probably 15 or so 914s, ranging in condition from Parts cars, Drivers, Abondoned 914-6 Projects (Thats Me) , Partial restoration (Again Me) To Sound Mechanical Original Cars with minor Paint issues, but this one I just bought I am happy to say is the nicest one I have owned...

Heres the specs:

1974 2.0 Appearance group
5 Fuchs
Full Vinyl Interior
Almost NO rust-Found a small hole through the Front Trunk in the wierdest Spot-Side of the wheel well?? Baffles Me??
Aftermarket Front Air Dam
Original Fuel Injection in Good working order
Plastic Dash Cover-Seriously This Is the NICEST Job I have ever seen-Most have bubbles and look like Junk, But this ACTUALLY looks original, until you touch it!!

Stuff that Is usaully Bad/Expensive to fix that is Like New on this one:

-Bumper Pads-New
-Bumprettes-New and Not rusted out on the inside
-Tailights-Heck all lenses-Like New
-Center Console-Not busted up-Small stitching came undone
-All guages Work-YES even the Clock!! ODO still turns too!!
-Fuchs-Look good except the right rear has minor rash
-Floor Pans-A little rust around the seat tracks, but no Pan Rust
-Suspension Console-NO RUST
-Engine Mounts-NO RUST
-Battery Tray-Battery Moved to Rear Trunk-You guessed it NO RUST
-Also No major Dents/Dings/Rust bubbles in Paint

Stuff I would fix to be perfectionist:
-Small rust bubble at the bottom of Driver's door
-Crack in Paint under sail panel on Driver's side
-Paint is a 7-8 with minor clear coat fade
-stitching in Seat Pads came undone in two places
-When you hit the brakes the CD player turn off-On
-Smokes a bit under VERY hard acceleration

Work just performed:
-New Mastercyliner
-New Front pads/Rotors
-new Front Wheel bearings
-New Shifter bushings-complete
-Alternator belt Tightened
-Replace Misc. Air lines

It comes with Records back to Early 80's...I have yet to verify through records, but I believe the ODO to be true at 125k...

Just looking for some input, as it has been a year or so since I sold my last 914 and the market was a bit soft then, but Now I am seeing somewhat marginal cars go on Ebay in the 5k range and the exceptional car reach 8-10k...

So what is a Really nice original 914 worth??

Thanks,
Ron

PS anyone in the market can give me a call...I think I may hang onto it until the next AutoX, but I would love to sell the Car to 914 Junkie!!

Having owned a 2.0 I would never spend $7k on a 914, its a great car but I feel sellers are dreaming when they try to sell above $6k unless its a special. Theres a 914 2.0 with 59k for sale now in the for sale section. Its asking price is $5k which is decent. The car you see on Ebay going for $7-$10 are eaither specials or cars with orginal low mileage, I have yet to see a 100k plus car pull in that amount of money.

BTW I paid $3700 for mine with a great running engine and little rust surfaces.

You are behind the market Frank. Very nice 73-74 2.0's with minimal rust are selling for over $7000 and going up. The car you could buy for $5000 two years ago is at least $7000 and maybe $8.

Yep, prices have doubled in three years (from individuals) because more folks care, and some are dreaming...

It's like real estate... I don't care what they say, a trailer on an acre isn't worth $200,000.00.

This one just sold on E-Bay for $9,100. Based on the description and the photos it was pretty much "mint". It had 74k document miles, all the appearance group options but it was a 1.7. All original paint, and virtually no rust. It's a 1973.

Do an "advanced search" on E-Bay and select "completed items only" This will give you an idea of what things "sold" for vs. what people were asking.

Damm, I just got a beautiful set of Fuchs and now I want Mahles

If you guys are basing your prices on Ebay figures forget it, half the sales dont go through. Ive seen so many 911's and 914s
sell" only to be relisted. Maybe the market has changed but I would never pay over $5k for another 914. Its a fun car, but underpowered.

Hello,

Being an Ebay PowerSeller I can tell you most of the sales do go thru, I have been selling for 4 years now and I have had 2 sales not go thru (out of 20+ Car/Motorcycle successful sales), 1 a fella sent me a $1000.00 deposit then never returned my phone calls/emails, and the 2nd guy backed out before auction ended...

I am glad all buyer's are not like you FenderGuy, but everyone has the right to their own opinion...

Thanks for the input,
Ron

It's too bad when members continually cut down the prices of our cars. For what we put into the cars, both $'s and time they should command a higher price. I see beetles selling for $5-6k that are not really in great shape. I think the 914 group is what is holding the prices back on our own cars. Each year there are fewer and fewer teeners on the road which should drive the prices up. Just my $.02. Eddy

I agree with eddy... Karman Ghia convertibles are going for 7-10k for decent cars... and they have cheaper/more easily found parts... why shouldn't our car be worth more?

I think the price is really affected by where you live too. I read the price guidelines in Excellence and I just laugh. None of those prices are even close out here in the midwest. Here in Chicago you'll hardly ever see teeners on the road (they're as rare as Triumph TR6's or Austin Healeys). If you do see one in the paper it's easily priced at or above 5-7k and that's for cars who's doors might stick, have rust, or have been converted to carbs. What's really interesting to me is why prices aren't higher for the 914, especially for a car that's becoming ever more desireable and scarce. Nobody can afford 356's and folks aren't lining up to buy a 924, 944, or even a 928's. The Cayenne is too expensinve. The Boxster is also expensive and somewhat desireable (from a 914 ownership viewpoint) but why bother when you can be sitting in a 911 SC or Carrera for the price of a used Boxster. Actually, lately I've seen used Boxsters dip below 20K out here. Anyway, that really only leaves two older models that you might think of purchasing for restoration/upgrades and long term ownership, either a 914 or a 911 (SC, Carrera, 993, maybe even a 964). Anyway, just my .02.

Well your wrong I am not cutting down the car, I started in a 914. I had a blast in my car, but when I see some of these cars prices almost in line with a 911, My first choice would be a 911. I think you realize that no matter how much you put into any car, you will never get back what you put in. Its a fact of life. What prices would you like to see on these cars? $10k-$15k? If the 914 prices ever hit these prices, there would be a flood of Huesseys out there selling thier cars. I'm all for the 914 getting a hike in prices, but upper $8's in my OP with a 1.7 or 1.8 is better spent elsewhere.

RonD922 they are opinions like you said I doubt what I say will have an effect on the sale ratio of these cars. Ive been on ebay a lot latley and seen a lot of 911s and 914 that sell and then resell again, maybe you're having better luck then most.

Ebay it self is another story, been on since 1999, its pretty much turned into crap these days. I see so many Porsches with non Porsche owners selling a car they have no idea what they have. They just know Porsche sells.

end of rant
