Electronic ignition?
I have read that you could put Electronic ignition in place of cap/distributor/points/condenser.
Any comments on this? If someone recommends it, where can i find detailed instruction? If i search for TDC, i know i could look at marks on the distributor. If i replace with electronic, my only reference for TDC would be the flywheel? Right? I am confused... |

What most people refer to as "elec ignition" is something that eletronicaly replaces the points and condensor. This way the igntion coil is triggered by an electric (usally optical but can be magnetic) signal that doesn't were out unlike the mechanical switch the points are, and like anything else mechanical the points wear out. Elec igntions are more acurate and don't require adjustment every 5000 miles like points. The Allison/Crane or Crane Cams is probably the best one. There are a few others that are cheaper Permotronix, or Ignitor. One of the cheaper ones has had some reliability issues, can't remember which one.
A full on electric ignition would require a crank trigger and a coil for every two or for each cylinder. The stock FI wouldn't work so either aftermarket FI or carbs would be needed. IMHO there is no reason to go to such extreams unless you have a 200 hp racing engine. |

SDS makes a replacement EFI computer that is fully programable. If you buy the SDS-3F, you also get a coil pack and the crank trigger for a complete crank triggered ignition. They make the system for both 4 and 6 cylinder engines.
Not afilliation, etc, blah, blah, blah. http://www.sdsefi.com/ James |
