I had a '74 1.8L up to 103 once. It probably had another 8 or 9 mph, but it was windy and the top was down.

I had my 2.1L up to 125 MPH at Thunderhill last October. It had more(got up to 5200RPM) but the front strait is only so long and then you have to turn.

101mph, down a slight incline, red lined, engine screaming, with the top off and a tailwind.
It was a stock 1971 914 1.7L w/poorly balanced dual-Delortos

Speedo was reading 120, actuall?? I was following in the wake of a red Mercedes from Vegas to LA in route to the Pomona swapmeet. Long story short make sure you have ALL of the cooling tin on the engine.

Indicated 130mph (surely off by 5-10%), down a grade in the Calif desert earlier this year...

Loud, but stable.

speedo said 120-130 right in that area... with 195 60 14 tires...
when i pulled over the turbo was glowing RED... it was dark andthe turbo lit up the battery. i found out later that it's natural for my turbo to get that hot.

I used to regularly hit 100mph on the Vancouver Island Highway. On one brave day I hit 125 mph. Do these cars start to come off the ground at high speeds? It feels like it. Carbed 2.0L

The other day I hit an indicated 115, but I had to get out of it because there is a turn at the end of the road, just a bit under 1/4 mile from the start. I wonder what 5500rpm in 5th gear works out to be? 195-60-15 tires, I know the engine will pull 5th gear to at least 5500, maybe higher.

A few good friends in the garage late at night standing around the work bench + a few too many good beers = stories of traveling through a blizzard on a snow covered freeway at oh at least 200 mph. really.. it could happen. And then there was the time when we found that set of wings on the side of the road, so we strapped em on the roof of the teener to get them home. You know you can't just leave a cool looking set of wings laying on the side of the road. You'll never believe it but they clipped right in place of the targa! Well you can only imagine what happened on the way home...

125 indicated. Level ground, about a 5 mile run up from 70 MPH. Up above about 110, the speedometer needle hardly budges, even if you leave your foot on the floor.

6250 RPM in 5th gear with stock tires (165/80-15) is about 138 MPH. 5500 RPM in 5th would be 122 MPH. You can calculate it down to your own tire size.

Speeds are from this URL: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/2499/901gears.html . 914s have 7:31 ring and pinion sets, and ZD 5th gears.

It says "23.5 inch tire", but I think it means 25.3 inch wheel. That's the overall diameter of a 165/80-15 (stock 914) tire.

125 indicated / 117 calculated with 205/50/15. Can't remember the revs.

Front staight at Portland Inter. Raceway. Not a long distance but I had just nailed the exit of turn 9 and carried alot more speed onto the front staight. It was called "Driver Training" day. More like "see how much you can scare yourself" day for us daily drivers.

1.9L ported/polished... 10.5:1 Compression ... 40mm Dellortos... cam etc.

Oh yeah, and 110 octane race gas + a bottle of octane booster.

The fast was cool but the brake fade at the end almost made me piss my self. I kept going straight rather than going through the Festival curves/Chicane. It was time to hit the pits after that one and check my undies.

My '67 Mustang I took to 130 something and quit because the car started feeling unsafe.

My 914... Um maybe 105 mph. I have a 1973 2.0L and I was at about 4900 RPM in 4th. Since 5th gear is an overdrive the only way I could increase speed with it would be to be going down a very sharp cliff.

My '94 Dodge Stealth I took to 156mph on some 2 lane road in the middle of nowhere (I'm not a professional, but I wouldn't recomend trying this at home) where a deer jumped out and I had to swerve a little (okay a lot) and do a little ditch running. Amazingly enough I didn't hit anything, the car made some weird noises going that fast over dirt and rocks, but I drove away with no damage done.

My 2000 Jeep TJ has seen 95mph with the top off Wow is that windy.

In my 914 2.0L, I saw 125 (205x50x15's)indicated on the speedo before I chicken out. It was on the I-90 Bridge, going East, cool wet summer morning air. The car felt very stable with more to go although I was running out of room.
The same run on my motorcycle I hit 120mph on the speedo. Now that was scary! At that speed the wind is a giant hand trying to rip you off the bike.
Fastest I ever drove was in my brother's72 240Z, I hit 135mph on the speedo, same run on the bridge.

I saw 140mph indicated in my 70 914/6 with a 3.0. Started to get a little loose around there....

I also did 120mph with a mini track trailer behind the car....was going to work and some rice boy tried to pass on the right....was NOT gonna happen....

Hey Mike,
Extra legal speeds in 914s is fun, no? At Mid-Ohio at that speed, once you get on the brakes for turn 4, the car hits a lot of "really bad" ripples and wants to dance. Visions of Mike Andretti going into the gravel trap dance in your head. God, can't wait for next year!

For those who want a more accurate "top speed", ignore that unreliable speedo and get a reading from handheld GPS unit sitting on the dash.
