vacuum hose routing
So while I put off debugging my electrical problems, I had a few questions about vacuum hose routing. I have a 1976 2.0L.
1) The distributor vacuum servo has 2 hose connection points. My car had only one hose connected from the side away from the distributor (which I think is advance) and no hose connected to the near side (retard ?). The advance hose goes to the air box below the throttle. Is this corrrect ? Is the retard simply not connected ? 2) According to Haynes, there is supposed to be a line from the impeller housing that pushes air through gas tank and the charcoal cannister. I can see the fitting on the impeller housing (near battery area) but don't know where to run a hose to. Any tips ? 3) My deceleration valve seems not to work at all. I have the small (control) line and one of the larger lines connected to the air box below the throttle. The other large line goes to the air box just after the filter. If I disconnect the latter and feel w/ my finger while opening and suddenly closingthe throttle, I get nothing at all. Also, I've noticed a tendency to backfire on deceleration (I know this could also be exhaust leaks, which I plan to address shortly.) Is there a source for a deceleration valve (even if it's not OEM) ? Is it worth bothering about ? |

#1: You have described what the factory did, but swapped the labels. It's the advance line that is not connected to anything, and the retard line is hooked up and functional. It was evidently cheaper for the factory to simply leave off the advance fitting from the throttle body, rather than get a new run of distributor dashpots when they wanted to eliminate vacuum advance.
#2: The hose should go to the charcoal cannister, which should be in the engine bay near the battery tray. And another hose should go from the cannister to the air cleaner. There should also be a very small metal hard line going through the center tunnel; this should have a small hose fitted to it which goes to the cannister as well. #3: Your DV sounds non-functional. Have you revved the motor up to 3000 RPM and let it snap shut, while checking that one hose? If so, then the DV is definitely gone. It probably is not causing your backfires, though. --DD

Dave,
Thanks a lot for the help. Just a few things to clarify : #1 Just to be sure, the retard is the input that is pointing away from the distributor ? #2 Okay, looks like I don't have a charcoal canister; probably after 30 years it wouldn't be too effective. I think I've seen the end of the hose coming from the center tunnel : a small yellowish (probably clear, once) plastic line that comes up into the engine compartment near the battery area. Sound right ? #3 Okay, I'll puit a replacement DV on my list of things to get around to someday... Cheers, Jeff |

#1 - The advance fitting points away from the distributor body, toward the left-rear corner of the car. The retard fitting points back toward the distributor body, toward the right side of the car. (Assuming the distributor is pretty close to stock orientation, of course!!)
#2 - There should be a very very small hose or hose fitting coming out of the center tunnel near the fuel lines. Smaller than the fuel lines, definitely. It sort of sounds like you're describing one of the fuel lines? Not sure. --DD
