911 or 914
Ok, I'm sure this come up all the time, but I would like to know.
What is a more fun, Performance Porsche car. The 914-6 or a similar sized engine 911. We are talking on the side roads, with lots of turns and twisties, loose pavement and rocks. Does the 914 stay on the road better because of the mid-engine? I assume that the 911 is a far more quality built machine but as far as the fun factor what's the deal?

914 is more fun on the asphalt, but loose pavement side roads with rocks I would rather have an audi quattro.

Yeah, stick to the smooth asphalt of the roads and tracks.
Loose pavement and rocks will mean a wrecked car and rage... KT

The 914 is lighter and more nimble, and more of a "raw" feel--it's just you and the road. The 911 is more comfortable, has a higher-quality feel to it, and (at least in the later cars) may very well have more overall grip due to larger tires. It also is much more recognizeable than the 914, which may be good or bad depending on what you want from the car.
I feel the 914 is much more fun. The 911 guys may have other opinions. --DD

Not that I look for the the loose roads or anything. I was merely looking for the the best handling Porsche car for the worst country back roads. I think a 74' 914 is my next car.
Thanks for the info. Otto

I had, at one time, a 74 914 w/2.4L 6er and a 73 911 w/2.7L, both in equally good condition. One had to go. The 911 was worth more, I had less into it ,and I liked driving the 914 more....much more responsive than the 911....tho the 911 felt more solid. The 911 went. Never looked back.

I am a long time 911 owner and just picked up a 914, whcih is getting close to being road worthy again. As some mentioned, the 914 is a blast and much more raw that my SC. Now my prior 911, and 1967, was similar to the 914 in many ways. I am anxious to get the 914 back on the road and should have a better answer later in the year.

Buy both there small.
Just kidding. I own a 1996 993 TIP C2 cabriolet and a 1975 914-6 with a Euro 3.2 motor in it. The 914 is quicker and corners better than the 911. Its more fun to drive, but not as comfortable or relaxing. I also have stiff suspension and stock seats in the 914. The 911 has nice leather seats, spongy suspension and it has an automatic. I drive the 911 as a daily driver because I spend allot of time stuck in traffic on the freeway between appointments. The 911 has auto everything and AC in the summer time. I also spend allot of time on the cell phone between appointments. The 914 is to loud to use with a cell phone and you will roast to death in the summer time with the windows up. A stick is also very frustrating when your stuck in traffic. For days that are just back and forth to the office I will drive the 914. Both cars are reliable and a blast to drive. |

914s have a longer wheel base and of course, the mid engine. They are far more predictable. The only thing I don't like about the 914 is the size of the cabin. I don't like the Boxster I have in that respect either. But, the mid engine concept proved itself handsomely once again with the Box.
Overall, Ilike my 911 the best, but we're all different. |

If The 914 is such a awesome car, Excuse me for being naive, but why did Porsche stop making a mid engine car. You cant tell me that cabin size and comfort were a priority in the mid 70'S, or was it?

Why did they stop making the 914? Money. It didn't sell as well as they needed it to if they were going to make enough profit to make it worthwhile.

Dave,
Porsche had to stop as VW took over the Karmann line for the watercooled front wheeldrive cars. Porsche looked at moving the assembly somewhere else but it was too expensive to do and still make money on the car. It sold well enough to make a profit for Porsche who did have hard times in the '70's.

I bought a 1975 Volkswagen Scirroco that was made at the Karmann factory. It was a better built more practical car than the 914.
With all the unibody water traps in the 914 its a miracle that any of them are still on the road today.

I have both an '81 911SC and a '74 914 2.0. If I had to pick one it would be tough to choose. The 911 is hands down more comfortable and way more powerful. It's a much better GT than a 914. If I had to take one on a four hour trip it would be the 911.
The 914 though excels when carving twisty back roads or on an autocross course. It's a great weekend fun car. It's very easy to drive a 914 fast. The 911 takes much more skill and technique and the fun in it is mastering the tricky handling and throttle steering. Now a 914-6 with a big 200hp motor is like a car from a different planet. If you ever get a chance to ride in one of those it will blow your mind. |

A 914 with a higher hp engine (above 150hp) is a animal. Way more fun and can scare you as its power to weight ratio drops.
A stock 2.0l with better shocks and tires is a blast as they are so balanced. Those early Scirroco's were fun but with only 75hp not that fast although they are a more modern design. The 914 with its mid engine design is still a different animal that is fairly unique. What other '60's car design is still fairly modern and can AX with the best of them? Geoff
