Header temps @ the head

I had a CHT gauge that I used in my IV that work well. For my SIX conversion I installed the TC on the header as close to the head port as possible on #3 cylinder.
Just wondering what range of temp should I be looking for. I can idle at 350 and jump to 500 very quickly if I hold the rpms at 2500

Thoughts?

CHT or EGT???

cht = cylinder head temp. UNDER YOUR SPAKPLUG
EGT - PROBE in the HEADER that tells you EXHAUST GAS TEMP

CHT.

Under the plug was not an option so I installed it high on the header. I figure it would give me some indication.

Once I get a baseline temp I will then be able to tell if something is going wrong.

egt's get way hotter than heads.

bad idea.... and its not setup right for CHT then is it?

its giving you a nonsense reading of the header temp...NOT head temp

Exhaust gas temp is usually between 1400(rich) - 1600(lean) degrees....any correlation...don't think so.

CHT, oil temp and pressure are the big three......an air/fuel gauge is a better gauge for lean verus rich.

I know this is a little dated of a topic, but can anyone explain some specifics of a CHT, as far as where the sender would mount (need to drill into the head, or does it surface mount?). I am talking about something aftermarket for a gauge, not the CHT for the computer.

most CHT's have a thermocouple ring that goes UNDER a sparkplug. this gives a very accurate reading.
