1.8 warmup problems
Starting my 74 1.8 has become a problem when cold. The engine will fire run then die. I have 15in/ of vacume at idle. The temp sensorI was replaced 3yrs ago. The only way to keep the engine running is to crack the throttle(which is a no-no) when starting and keep it at a fast idle untill warm. The engine runs and starts great after warm-up. Please help

Mike:
2 possibilities as I see it. The Auxiliary Air Valve may be rusted or stuck in the closed position. This guy will supply extra air to the engine during warm up. If stuck closed may cause stumbling when cold. Another possibility may be a faulty Cylinder Head Temp sensor (also called Temp Sensor II) There is a way to test both these theories. Check Kjell Helin's article on the 914fan website at http://www.914fan.net/djet.html It's an excellent guide that I printed up and keep on my toolbench. If it is the AAV, you should try to repair it, they are supposedly hard to come by. A new CHT is about $20.00 at almost any parts place. Good Luck ------------------ Herb |

Just realized that we are talking L-jet FI here. Sorry, but I've got no experience with that system. I believe it still has AAV and CHT but take anything I said with a grain of salt (or a glass of beer, your preference)

HMeeder.I believe that you are correct. Both items that you have mentioned are much alike on both systems. I suspect the AAV due to the fact that by cracking the throttle will produce the extra air that would be lacking due to a closed AAV. The extra air is needed to deflect the air flap enough to increase the RPM's. Thanks very much for the info.
