clutch/tranny help

teener had to take a flatbed home from work last night. new AAA paid for this one, already worth the signup fee in towing so far.

was loosing power just thought it might have been a FI problem. but 3rd was starting to go out/slip, at next light lost all drive. car tries to get in a gear but wont pull at all.

going to have to check everthing back there.
drive shafts, transmission, throw out bearings. and to top it off i will be out of town next week on business. hope to get a chance to look thru some of it tonight to figure out what went wrong.

took a look underneath last night
didn't have a lot of time to get a full idea what is going on

put the rear of the car up on jack stand and rocked the wheels back and forth a little and had the engine turn them in the air OK, with out any grinding sounds.

but after messing around a little was able to get it to stay in first or reverse up and down the driveway a couple of times, then it slipped out of gear and wouldn't keep catch anymore. other forward gears don't engage either

haven't had a chance to check linkage yet

is this maybe a linkage issue? like something with a 1st/rev repair that i have read about in the tech section, or is this a full tranny removal to replace the clutch?

wont have the time to really get into this for a few weeks, business trip out of town. but want to know what i am in for when i get back. going to get to read repair manuals on the plane. wee.

did you shift at the tranny or with the normal shifter?

try shifting directly at the tranny output, disconnect the rod and see if it shifts OK.
if not, it's the tranny ...

as for the linkage, check the cone set-screw at the shiftrod coupler right behind the firewall (assuming you have a sideshifter).
if that screw comes loose and starts to back out, you won't be able to find the gears ...

HELP
im lost now
replaced some bushings i the tranny output and at the shift rod connection where the ball cup was in peices. but the thing still grinds and doesnt wanna find a gear. clutch seems to be ok.

the wheels spin when in gear, up on jack stands but with out much force and when on the ground wont move forward just some grinding and clanging noises. wont catch in any gear.

tried slacking and tightening the clutch cable and it seems to be engaging.

do i have a tranny rebuild in my future?

getting frustrated trying to solve the transmission issue going on.

cant figure out from all the tech issues i have been reading if it is a clutch issue or a transmission issue.

but i know with the work i have been able to do that is isnt a shifter/linkage issue.

if it is a tranny issue should i drop it and take it to a shop to take care of or am i better off just flatbedding it to a shop and leave it to them to fix.

Ted, did you check the firewall bushing and the shift coupler bushings? If the plastic bushings in the coupler fail and fall out, you'll have a very hard time shifting. Before worrying about a transaxle rebuild, first replace all the plastic bushings and parts from the shifter back to the transaxle. If there's still a problem, then there's another plastic bushing in the release fork that can cause problems when it wears out. But that one requires pulling the transaxle. As Andy said, with the shift rod disconnected at the trans. and if you can click it into all the gears there then the transmission is OK.

bushings are fine now, and it seems to engage the gears but makes a awfull rattling sound. do not think it is the clutch since it seems to be sitting fine and the engaging.

have you tried shifting without using the clutch to see if it will engage? i'm not familiar with 914's but the problem you're describing sounds similar to what happens on the 944's when either the throwout bearing or the y-fork breaks, both require clutch removal to replace the part.
