SHort shift
In the past year I have owned a pristine 83 SC and 59 Roadster HOWEVER this is the most fun I have had on four wheels. But the lenght of the shift seems extreme. I installed a Weltmeister short shifter in my SC and it was great. ANyone had luck with the 914. WHich brand?
Also what about the reverse lock out to prevent that screech when slamming into second. Oh yeah, it is the 914.2.L with teh 5 speed. |

Also check the bushings in the shift linkage. It will help the stock shifter work much better.
If it's a 2.0, then it's a side shifter. Check the bushings at the end of the shift rod, the shift coupler bushings, the firewall bushing, and the bushing at the base of the shift lever. Everyone forgets the one at the base of the shifter.

Replacing all the bushings in the linkage will make a world of difference, Pelican's got a kit with the whole works. If you're still not happy, most people think the Rennshift is better than sliced bread. Some folks don't like the extra effort (you gotta push a little harder). I've got the cheaper alternative...the Weltmeister version...and I'm happy with it.

Hey Goose:
I just move to Bend from Eugene. did not recall a PCA 914 in the local club. Not a member, eh? I would like to meet some more 914 people that are local however none are in the High Desert of PCA. Ralph

Ralph...yeah I'm a member, but a fairly recent one....Cascade region. Let me know when you're going to be in Eugene and we'll get together. A friend and I have a shop here with 7 914's at last count...in various stages of construction and destruction.

There is a fairly strong PacNW 914 contingent. Some hang out here, some on the 914club BBS, some on both. They're a reasonably active bunch... The West Coast Classic next July is going to be in the Portland area, and of course the Porsche Parade next year (August??) will also be in Portland. They autoX at Bremerton and PIR, as well as further north.
You've got some pretty decent support out there. --DD

I'm getting ready to put that Weltmeister short shift kit. I have bought all new bushings and the cup that the shifter sits in too. I have a '85 Carrera. Is there any last minute tips before I really get into this project?
I must say though that I'm not off to a good start cause I already broke the knob trying to get it off. That's where I quit yesterday and that's the first step! I hope it goes smoother from here on. Ooops, I posted this to the wrong forum. Sorry. I didn't read it close enough when I did the search thing.
