Dan Gurney Wheels

I don't know what kind of wheels I have but I have seen them called Dan Gurney mags.; silver bent and flat 8 spoke.

My question: Can I use the smooth chrome center hub caps sold on Ebay?

I currently have ugly ribbed black plastic caps that have the porsche logo carved in them.

Also, any suggestion on how to really shine them up? i have used mothers polish and a lot of elbow grease; but the are old wheels and have a few discolorations. Anything stronger or more effective on the trouble spots?

Thanks, Speed

Several different companies made/sold them. The ones shown above are American Racing. That my car in 1979.

As far as the center cap it depends on the diameter of the hole.

Exactly the wheels I have; only much shinier. I have the same caps as you except mine are black plastic and chewed up. Great, thanks!

I have a set of those wheels. They were ugly grey when I first got the car. I spent hours polishing by hand with Blue Magic. My fingers were cramped for weeks. When I was done, I put a coat of wax on them which has helped to keep them shiny.

Since then I've spruced them up a bit with Mothers polish. Seemed to work the same as Blue Magic.

About a week ago I got one of those Mother's Power Balls and some of their liquid metal polish. Hooked it up to the drill and got after it. It did a pretty good job. It did a much better job at shining the holes (rough casting) than I could do by hand. But, it was not the miracle instant clean and polish Chip Foose would have you believe in the TV commercial.

Good question about the caps. Anyone know if there is one that fits in the hole vs. the thing that looks like a giant hollow-point bullet that affixes with four screws? Mine are looking pretty nasty now.

I had those wheels on mine waaayyy back, had a hell of a time keeping them balanced, aka they bent easily.

How can you tell they are bent? Mine tend to need balancing a lot, but I figured it was because the wheel weights don't stick so good to 30+ years of brake dust accumulation on the inside!

Westerns!

I'd pay a few extra bucks for a 5 lug set of those.

I remember seeing a picture years ago of a set of 8 or 9" wheels/ five bolts on a 911. Looked cool.

Well guys, it seems there is a fan base out there for these wheels; I think I just may keep them.

I never had any real success polising by hand, so I went to a place that polishes those huge aluminum RVs. They sold me a large buffing wheel made of cloth for about $12 and two grades of polishing compounds. Went to Harbor Freight and bought one of those Hi RPM hand grinders. GOt great results on teh wheels so went to town on everything aluminum. Oh, and get a face shield and cover yourself head to foot. You will look like you worked in a coal mine all day!

Speed_bluester,

It looks like the caps you have fit inside the center hole. What's the diameter of that hole?

Are you going to be at Glenn's 914 Swap Meet this Sunday?
