Dash to windshield seal, what for?

What purpose does the windhield to dash seal serve. Mine got destroyed while being removed for painting, and now I want to put the winshield in. I've already decided to eliminate the top of dash vinyl pad, I'm painting it semi-gloss black. Can't I just put an extra line of butyl tape there? The seal is very pricey.

I think the seal is mainly for looks-to brigdge the gap between the top dash and glass. You might try looking up the gasket cross-section and looking in JC Whitney or someplace in town for a match. As I recall, its a simple cross-section. Good luck!
