Pretty quiet membership here, I realize what I'm doing is hard to relate to but I plan to develop products that can be applied to a "stock" 914.

Here's a front design I'm considering. It's on the bumper link but here it is since the 914club site is currently down...

Nice. Are you using a design program like Alias?

What's that front hood scoop for? One of the things I like most abouts 14's is that nice smooth sloping hood.
How about some vents for the engine?
Are the headlights going to be in the turn signal housings?
Too cool!!

Aaron,

just old fashioned chalk and pencil. One of these days I'll get a digitizer tablet and buy Photoshop. Many designers use this or the company supplied program like Alias.

Thanks,

Gary,

I plan to fill in the top "locker" vents so I'm toying with the idea of welding in a Boxster tail light recess. Without the headlight doors the hood is virtually featureless. See the link in the first post for all the details...

Thanks!

Great work! I've been eyeing a tablet for some time now . It lets you have quite a bit of freedom. I am on the tooling side of things, I just got finished machining a 1/4 scale model of an aftermarket bumper for the Ford Fusion. From Alias I would take your design and make patterns for molds...

Could you take 3-d point scans from a full size plug? What material do you make the mold? That 1/4 scale must be pretty accurate!

Digitizing anything is incredibly expensive. Its not the best starting point. I was quoted $3000.00 for 1/2 a scale model to be laser scanned with no clean up of the surfaces...ouch! I believe with Alias you create the 3D design and send an iges file that I would work on and mill what you needed. Its doable, but not cost effective.

The material for tooling can be a number of things depending on your need. Rennshape, MDF,or even styling/modeling clay can be used. The Auto industry has used clay covering a structure and have the entire car machined at 1 time. That way they can make freehand changes at their leisure.

MDF or Rennshape could be used to make an accurate pattern, then fiberglass to pull a mold off of it for either a fiberglass or themoformed plastic part. If it was steel, the file would be sent to a shop that would specializes in large stamping .
The 1/4 scale was only tough due to the extra long cutters and one being a .030 carbide endmill. Lots of little detail would have been missed without it.

Very cool headlight. I was thinking about something similar, but I thought I would need a glass lens because of the heat. Is this something that is available commercially?

My first post here has a link to my project thread on 914club.com. There is a list of links to each sub-feature one of which is "HID Headlights in the signal pods". All the details are there.

It is perfect for my design since the stock pop-up headlights weren't appropriate for a modern design and the space gave way to radiators...

Tony at TC Design has made great progress on mounting the drivetrain. He used the stock Boxster transmission mount bolted on a welded boxed section and cut some of the rear firewall. The front motor mounts are about 8" rear of the bar and he plans to use the stock front motor mount to reduce radial engine motion. The firewall will be replaced once fitment is complete. While the work is fantastic, it unfortunately will make it difficult to reproduce a simple conversion kit. If you ever need a spec track or street cage, TC Design is arguably the best in SF Bay Area.

Thanks David!

I saw a great episode of "Rides" last night with a "paint-off" of two top air-brush artists...
