No power to the fuel pump

Here's my situation:

I've started a restoration on a '70 914 1.7 FI that has sat up for a few years (don't know how long). The car has spark at all the plugs but no fuel.

I've discovered that the fuel pump was not working. I replaced the fuel pump relay and no change. The haynes manual says to check for 12V at Terminal 86. I assume that is #86 on the fuel pump relay. It has power, all I has is a test light so I don't have a meter reading. Next it says to check for ground at Terminal #85. No luck here.

I also checked for power at the fuel pump, and I got nothing. This is driving me crazy!

I removed the fuel pump to check it, too. Its shot so a new on is in order, but the lack of power at the fuel pump connection is still a problem.

And I thought restoring an older car would be easy!

All help would be much appreciated!

The 914 fuel pump will normally run for 3 seconds when the key is turned on, and only will continue to run if the engine is running (as sensed by the ECU). If you turn the key only to ON, you should hear the pump run for the 3 sec and then stop. I don't remember offhand how the ECU interfaces with the fuel pump relay, but there are wiring diagrams on the Pelican site. Good hunting.

As a follow-up, coil power to the fuel pump relay comes off a contact on the power relay on the same board, so you may want to check both relays. Look at the 914 electrical diagrams, especially the relay board and 71 914 Part 2 (the power diagrams shoud be basically the same as the 70) as to how things hook up.

Check this webpage: http://www.914fan.net/fuelpump.html It describes the fuel pump control system very thoroughly.
