Arrow Head Temp Sensor

I've had a 75' 2.0 for a month and I've gotten it to run. I think that I've corrected a nasty backfire, and I'm preparing to dive into the previous owners wiring nightmare....Well, maybe it's not that bad. Anyhow, I need to install a head temp sensor and in the engine compartment there are 2 gray wires with red stripes that have been cut and are lying on the case. These wires are in the same bundle as the tach and starter/solenoid. Could one of these be the wire in question. Also, apparently these same wires have been shorted at the main fuse panel.
I'm just getting started here and the Haynes manual doesn't help alot. Is there a good, color, on line resource?

I bet your reverse lights don't work, do they? The grey/brown wires are what power the backup lights.

The CHT sensor wire is in the FI wiring harness. It's over on the right-hand side of the engine bay, plugged into the CHT sensor. Which lives in the cylinder head by the #3 (right-rear) spark plug; look for an additional hole in the engine tin with a wire coming out of it.

For color diagrams on-line, see:

The 75 would be closest to the 74 diagrams, which are the same ones in Haynes but in color. Note that these diagrams are not intended to help you locate the components, but to see how the electrons get to and from them.

Thank you Dave for your quick response. I know that at least one reverse bulb is not in place. Thank you for solving this mystery before the migrane set in!!!
As far as the temp sensor is concerned....The fuel injection has been removed wiring harness and all... Can I run the sensor directly to the fuse panel or will I need some kind of relay or other component to make it function???

The temp sensor is only for the stock fuel injection! The "TEMP" gauge in the center console (if you have one) is an oil temperature gauge, and it is run from a sender down in the "taco plate". That's the round sump plate on the bottom of the engine on the left-front corner which is held on by two bolts. If yours doesn't have a wire coming out of it, you don't have a sender.

A search on the BBS should turn up a few solutions if you don't have the plate with the sender and want to add a sender.

If you want a head temp gauge, you will need to buy a sensor and gauge. The common CHT gauges work off of a completely different principle than the stock one, so you can't mix and match.
