i am looking to replace my fuel filter and cant seem to locate where it is any where. don't think it is up front cause the fuel pump is still in the engine bay. what and where should i be looking for. have an extra that the PO gave me with box of spare parts but cant locate anything that looks like it any where. if it is missing where should i install the one i have.

There is a sock filter (about 4" long metal screen) in the tank...you must drain the tank and remove the outlet port to access this. You do not need to remove the tank. My guess though is that you are talking about an inline filter? I believe these are aftermarket add-ons. I installed mine in the engine compartment since it's easy to view and change. Just cut the line and use some hose clamps. You may also look at your line and see if it needs replacement. Hope this helps.

how would i access that? would i have to do that everytime. doesn't sound very easy for routine maintenance.
the one i have on my spare parts box is definitely a inline type. forgot to mention i have a pretty stock 1973 2.0l

The sock filter is just there to keep the major chunks of crud out of the fuel lines. The original fuel filter is the square one in your first picture.
There should be a couple of "fingers" sticking off of the "pod" on the right side of the engine bay where the motor mount bar attaches to the chassis. The filter should sit on those fingers. If not there, trace the fuel lines from the center tunnel to the fuel pump. Somewhere in there should be the filter. --DD
