checking out a prospective 914

Hey I'm looking for a 914 and found this one locally thru ebay:
4611730264

Any tips on what to look for with this model year? I dont know much about 914 but am pretty familliar with 944. Also what would be a price range for the car, just looking for an occassional driver.

This rare Porsche Targa with the 2.0 instead of the 1.8 is a blast to drive.Last friday was a beautiful day, and I had the top off and put 70 miles on it. The engine was rebuilt a while back and runs strong. This car is in need of restoration, however there is no rust or rot anywhere.

Just my $.02 below on the add above

- Check the engine SN. Too may VW bus engines are making their way into 914's..You don't want one in yours.
- Ask for copies of the rebuild sheet. Any good rebuild shop will give one to the owner onc ethe rebuild is done.
- There is RUST on the car. Most cars have RUST unless it was restored / repaired. Since this one is in need of restoration....It has rust. The trick is can you find it when you are looking at it or do you find it once you get the car home.
- Check yourself on the price. The car needs work but seems to be all there.

Cheers and Welcome

Some good reading for you:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/How_to_buy_a_914.htm
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/914_Darling_FAQ/914_Darling_FAQ.htm

The number one problem is rust. Actually, it probably makes up the whole top ten list... That said, NY is in the "rust belt", where they salt the roads in the winter. So some rust will be unavoidable. Us folks from the west coast have a somewhat spoiled view, since we get much less of the "tinworm" than the east coast folks do.
