914/6 hub removal
I was in the process of removing the front hub off my 914 (It probably has some type of 911 strut) and am perplexed at the type of dust cap it has. This dust cap is recessed into the hub and has a raised round section threaded for a 10mm bolt. How do I remove this thing? Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand what your dust cap is like. I have an original -6, my dust cap is a typical press on. Removed by prying with a large screwdriver and reinstalled with a rubber mallet. If yours is different, post a pic, maybe someone can help.

I'm not sure how I'll get the photo done, but we'll see. The cap is definately not the traditional cap with which is a press fit into the hub. Why is the center threaded?. Could the dust caps be gone and this a wierd type of nut?

Looks like you want to thread a slide-hammer into there and pop that sucker off! Either that, or get some very very very very strong thin hooks and try prying it off.

That's a later Turbo hub (matches your brakes). It's meant for a factory slide hammer type tool that's threaded. Some slide hammers allow you to put a threaded fastener at the end. If so, try an M8 x ?? x 1 in there (fairly common 13mm bolt used all over your car). It may be an M6 (10mm variety)
It's actually a good idea. If you've ever tried to get a stuck cover off you'll know what I mean.

Any time you hear "Porsche factory" associated with a tool you know it can't be good! $$$! Try to adapt a domestic slide hammer like Eric suggested. Or how about threading a bolt into it and pry it out using the bolt head? Last edited by maf 914; 03-02-2006 at 11:43 AM.. |

Its actually a 10mm thread. Fortunately the end of my slide hammer is threaded for a 5/8" NF nut. I just weld different bolts to a 5/8" nut, screw it on to the slide hammer and voila!- another special tool is born.
