Honestly, I would say get the 911, or try to find a 951. as far as speed, the 951 will be more fun, but i personally like the 911 better. if you have any more questions, just give me an email... i am actually not that biased, just know the differences.

JUMP ON IT! You don't run across a 84 911 targa for $12000 every day! The 911 has great handling, isn't too expensive to repair, and doesn't have high insurance, at least mine doesn't. Also keep the 944. But don't let this golden opportunity pass you by!!!

The 911 will be a bit closer to the 914 in the way it "feels" and drives. The 944 tends to understeer quite a bit, especially at low speeds. The 911 will tend to understeer on turn-in, but oversteer at track-out. You'll have to learn how to drive it, but once you do you'll see that the handling is at least as good as the 944. (My opinion, that is.)

The feel of the 911 will be less sophisticated, but a bit more in touch with the road--more direct. It may not be as comfortable on loooong drives, though it would by no means be unliveable. It will be a bit more "raw" than the 944; louder, more obnoxious, lots more wind noise, probably a harsher ride. In short, everything that I like about my 914!!

The maintenance on the 911 should be less than that on the 944. The 911 doesn't have $1200 "major services" every 60K miles like the 944 does. (Timing belt, water pump, all the rollers, some cam gaskets, etc. etc. etc. The dollar figure is an exaggeration, but not completely.) The major extra expenses on the 911 would be oil (9-12 quarts vs. 4 or 6?), rear tires (they're wider and they wear about twice as fast as the fronts), and valve adjusts (it's a PITA to get to them, though maybe not compared to a 914).

If there isn't anything wrong with the Carrera, I'd get it. The 3.2s are one of my favorite 911 motors.

But the final point may be the most important: You said "...stick with [your] 944na that you love" (emphasis added). If you love the 944, why change? If it's a question about possibly adding the 911 to the stable, I think that would be a very nice way to go--the best of both worlds, so to speak.

I myself would dump both of them in a heartbeat to pick up a nice big-motor 914-6 conversion with "all the goodies", though. But that's my own personal preference.

Hi,

I have driven both a 85.5 911 Na and a Carrera of the vintage you have an oppotunity to buy, There are things I like about both cars, but in this case I would go for the Carrera. If there is nothing wrong with that car, then that price is a steal, you would be hard pressed to find a "decent" 911 Sc for that price. Look at it this way, buy the Carrera, drive it for awhile, and if you don't like it, sell it and you will have enough money to buy a very tricked out 951, or 944S2 maybe even a 968! (Or even better a sweet 914 - 6 hee hee theres my bias lol, hi Dave) As long as this car doesn't have any problems, you have an awesome opportunity here, not many 17 year olds get to drive 911's, of any vintage.
