Fog light lens gasket
I've decided to refurb my fog lights before I hang my bumper. I have new lenses, but no gaskets. Wayne says they are nla. Is there a substitute.

I tried something totally unconventional, but it worked.
Go to Home Depot or the like and buy some "Liquid Rubber" (some people use it to replace/renew handles on tools. It's also great for waterproofing electrical connections.) Pour the stuff in a shallow disposible dish and carefully roll the edge of the lense in the rubber, making sure that you cover the contact areas. The trickiest part of this procedure is to ensure that the new seal is smooth so that there won't be any gaps where it contacts the reflector. Once you pour the stuff in the dish you will have to move fairly quickly, so preparation is the key. Once coated I kept rotating it until it skinned up nice and smooth and then set the lense on a paint can cap to dry thoroughly. It was a bit difficult and I had to peel it off and do it twice before I was satisfied with the results. Since the gaskets are NLA and the old ones turned to dust when I pulled them apart, I saw no other really practical solution. Or... you could replace the lights with some driving lights for a relatively inexpensive investment and have some lights that actually work. Depends on what you are going for. Brad
What was the cost for the gaskets (should you ever get them, that is?) I thought you only had the one car. Why are you bothering with the fog gaskets when you just installed the driving lights? Wanted options? BTW Nice web site. Car looks great, are those 'glass flares or steel? Does your garage always look that clean or did you spruce up for the photo? Car and Driver had an article last year in their "10 Best" issue called "Garage-mahals" Photos of some incredibly clean and spacious garages. Except for the size, yours could qualify! ------------------ Herb '72 1.7 Tangerine 'Teen '74 2.0 Red Rustmobile |

Herb,
I wanted the gaskets because I have a set of OEM fogs that I refurbished before I got the Neolites. I might use them on a not-as-yet-purchased second 914. If not, I'll sell them on Ebay. AA wanted something like $5 apiece for the gaskets - they didn't sound too positive about finding them. I also called Hella directly - no luck. My flares are glas, they've been on the car since about 1978, and no cracks! As for the garage, yes, I spruced it before the pics, but I try to keep it organized and clean - next time, I'll take a pic in the This guy up the street from me (who moved) had an amazing garage. It was a shrine to his Ducati motorcycle - incredible artwork, custom tools, etc. The guy who bought the place is a woodworker and turned it into a really nice shop. I'm bush-league compared to those guys... Brad anders |

Bee Jay, I thought of something else. What shape are your reflectors in? If they're like most old fogs, they're pretty shot, and might be missing some sections of chrome. If so, go to the Eastwood web site(http://www.eastwoodcompany.com) - they have this "aluminum paint" product that they advertise for refinishing beat-up reflectors. I used simple chrome paint - you can't tell at all from looking at the beam patterns of the lights.

Someone on this board was making the gaskets and selling them. I think it was Scott Kline but I'm not totally positive.
Do a search on the Pelican classified forum and maybe you can find them & contact the seller. |
