Have both for 6 conversion, just wondering which would be best. 2.2 S. Will different gearing make a big difference?
Thanks Michael |

Use the six box as the high reving six will benefit from the gearing. 4 boxes have long gears as the 4 engines are low reving compared to the 6's. The six engines need the higher revs at cruise too to keep cool!

the sideshift tranny is the better sifting one,the only difference from -4 to -6 is 2nd and 5th gear,2nd gear is longer in-6 and 5th gear is shorter in-6

2nd, 3rd, and 5th are different. 1st and 4th are the same, IIRC.

All the tailshifters I have driven were very hard to locate gears.

I use a 4-box sideshifter in my '73 914-6conv, the car's original transmission & gear ratios. The Six engine has never overheated on long hi-way trips. San Jose -> Reno-> & back summer trips(over Donner Summit). San Jose -> Redding -> & back summer trips.

Finding a real /6 box will be a chore....also pricey. You can regar a /4 to suit your needs.

i threw away my oem six trans 10 yrs ago (well actually I sold it to Gordon Luy 6 yrs after i took it out of my sixer); you only needed the oem gears if you had that underpowered oem six; a newer torquey six obviates the difference
the tiny vertical shifter lever in the oem tailshifter is prone to breaking (done that 3 times in inconvenient places) do a sideshifter conversion; Dave at GPR used to make up the rear shiftrods & I have one of his in my car another advantage is if you race the thing & break a trans, sideshifters are relatively easy to find as replacements (yup - done that too & have one more spare in the shed)

Banned but not out, yet..

I am going to use this with my 901 box in the 914 2.0 tail shifter. Seine Systems
Hopefully it will be a cost effective solution to a tail shifter and provide nice clean accurate shifts. I have the Seine shift kit for my 915 box and really like the way it was built and the precise action. If their quality matches for the 901, I know I will not be disappointed.

oh, oh - when y'all say "tailshifter" do you have a genuine SIXer tailshifter or a 4 cyl tailshifter - they are DIFFERENT
as far as speed differences go, I calculated that the Sixer gear would only net me 5mph on a long straight at most race tracks; not worth the trouble; spend your money on brakes and cams instead

Pay attention to one914racer as he has done conversions to the tranny's. He has the ability to turn a T4 tranny to a -6.
