Seat belt kill switch
Before I go too far next week into looking at why my car will tunn over and not spark (as far as I can tell), what did the seat belt relay cause to not happen? I have a jumble of wires where my belts are, from them, and I had to unhook everything before I stripped and painted the tub. I just want to know i I need to hook any of this nonsense up, and if it could cause my no start problem.
Thanks

Seatbelt relay intereferes with cranking. If it turns over, it should not be related to this.
I wouldn't hook that nonsense back up though. Just join the big yellow wire (starter switch to solenoid) and the brown-only wires (grounds). Snip the rest. Last edited by RandyLok; 05-11-2006 at 11:20 AM.. |

Thanks Randy, I had a feeling that if it cranked it was not my problem. I wont have time to shoot the diagram until next week so you saved me some time.

I don't think the seat belt use monitor was interlocked with the ignition system. I think it was only a warning/reminder system. Back then cars were required to have seat belts, however there were no laws in the US that required anyone to use them. Even today, I can't think of a car that has a seatbelt/ignition interlock, just plenty of buzzers and bells!

It was a 1974-specific thing. It interrupted the starter circuit if it thought you didn't have your belts on. The law was repealed pretty quickly, though.
Some 75s also have this mis-feature. All other years of US-spec 914 that I know of have buzzers and lights. The early ones may not have lights, now that I think about it... --DD
