gages and speedo gear

thinking of buying a 914 but have 2 questions:

1) this 1970 was updated with a 1973 5 speed trans but is missing the part that connects the speedo cable to the trans. Is this a right angle gear connection or ? and is this a stock '70 item or a different '73 piece. I think the cable is from the '70 model.

2) all gages do not work. Is this typically a gage cluster problem or suspected individual items? (maybe there is a history of this ?)
Speedo because of (1) above, tach because of ? temp because of ? I don't know if these gages share a common fuse or connection if possible. Voltmeter is erratic.

thanks

The angle drive for the speedo is an easy fix. It has to be there because if you remove it all the gear oil will drain out.

As for the gauges, you'll need to take a look and see if they are hooked up correctly. Is so, you'll have to start tracing the circuits back through the fuse panel, relay board and source...

The angle drive is the same part for all years.

The speedometer and odometer are mechanically-driven, the rest are electrical. Hook up the angle drive and the speedo should work, the odo might (they fail not infrequently; see our Tech Articles section for an article about fixing that).

Check the fuses. Fuse #8 (I think, might be #9) powers the gauges and a number of other things.
