Talking Pelican Article

I finally got around to taking a bunch of picts and doing a short writeup about my 914 race car (that is still street legal and licensed). Wayne posted it on the site for those that are thinking of auto-x or time trials or even some club racing to get some ideas of how I do things. One thing not mentioned in the article is the CO2 tank and hose you can see in the first picture which is great for running my impact wrench at the race track. I also have air jacks to raise the car now which is much easier for an old guy like me....

Very cool write-up John! I've always admired your car at the SD autocrosses but didn't know all the details -- thanks!

What kind of rear calipers are those, BMW also?

Do you have any digitized in-car video that we can check out? Would love to see you and the big machine doing some hot laps at WSIR or other local tracks.

Thanks, BMW on the rear too. I digitized some video from a time trial at the Q last year where the cars in front of me spun pretty hard. If I can find them I'll send them to Wayne and he can put it on the site here.

Any details on the engine?

You've told us that it's a 2.7 liter, with 10:1 compression, trick rocker arms, and a good cam. Care to share more details, like bore and stroke, redline, etc.? Any power numbers?

The photos appear to show an aftermarket oil pump. Perhaps a two-stage one, feeding a dry sump? The center sump plate has been replaced by a Bug-style (or 911-style!) six-bolt one, and has an oil line coming out of it. I would guess that is a scavenge line, or perhaps an overflow of some kind? What kind of external mods have you made to keep oil pressure in the turns?

The 911 fan setup looks sharp. Is it, in fact, Sharp-built? Actually, I'm guessing FAT Performance, since they aren't that far from you. (Orange CA)

Could you share some details about the scoop on the back of the roof? I know you've told me about it, but it would be nice for others to hear as well. Would you be willing to add any of this info to the article?

Thanks for any and all extra info!

Well lets see, here's some more info as DD asked. The engine is 103.5x78 I think red line will be 8000 once the engine is broken in. Normal shifts will be at about 6500 or so since above that the valve covers fill with oil really fast and it is easy to blow out the gaskets unless you go to a three stage oil pump with suctions on each head. The oil pump is made by Autocraft and has a suction stage and a pressure stage. The sump is modified as you noted and the suction side pulls engine oil and pumps it through the cooler to the tank and the pressure side takes oil from the tank and supplies the pressure to the engine so there is never any pressure drop in turns. I think the fan is from FAT and is the setup that Black Forest likes and has been really reliable. The air deflector on the roof directs air towards the engine cover so the vacuum behind the rear window is broken and the engine runs about 8 to 10 degrees cooler with it. It actually lets some air pressure build up there where as before the vacuum just gets bigger the faster you go. Charlie Wallace a fabricator in San Diego did the first one I saw and it seems to work.

How about the trailing arm mount modification? I couldn't tell if you had relocated it upward, or if that was a really big brace that was sticking down, or exactly what was going on...
