Reverse gear wore out?

I just acquired a tranny from a 914. Year unknown. Side shifter. I am not sure how good of condition it was in so I took it apart to investigate. It looks really good inside, except for reverse gear. I don't know if it is wore out or normal. The double reverse gear and first gear have wear on the sides where they meet. Are the teeth suppose to be rounded on the sides of the gears. I know this sounds stupid but I don't know if they are designed like that, or wore out. I would guess wore out. If they are wore out, what problem will this cause if I don't fix the gears?
