Heat Exchangers / Exhaust on 1976 2.0

I have a recently acquired 1976 2.0. The previous owner fitted 1974 heat exchangers and exhaust. I need to get a catalytic converter on the car to get it smogged. Fortunately, most of the smog exquipment seems to be otherwise there. Do I need to replace everything from the heads back or is there another way to accomplish this? Any suggestions?
Your help is appreciated.
Dave

Two ways I know of to go on this:

Up-date the entire exhaust system, everything downstream of the heads; -OR-
Work with a muffler shop to add a catalyst to your current exhaust.

The former will be somewhat expensive, though you can probably find some 75 owner who has backdated already to pick up those ~7 HP that the late exhaust loses. The latter will not have a very predictable cost...
