Value of 1974 1.8 Zambezi Green with little if any rust
Hi All,
Contemplating sale of 1974 Green 914-1.8L with 81,900 miles with Fuchs alloys and great tires. Engine runs OK but leaks oil and SS heat exchangers creates smoke when idling. Also have complete (new main bearings, gasketsets, ARP rod bolts on rods with new bushings and rod bearings, new Euro 2.0L pistons,rings,cylinders, oil pump, fuel injectoors, etc) 1975/to be backdated to 1974 F.I. 2.0L engine stripped and refurbished and cleaned to bare metal ready for assembly as a swapper for this car's 1.8L stock. Theoretically this package can be used with minimal restoration into a 1974-2.0L (95-100HP) stock with appearance group and front rear factory sway bars and spare used 1.8L engine and tranny for sale or refurbishment. That would place it's top value at around 8-10k with a new repaint of OEM color. The car currently has minor door dings and surface rust in some areas and battery tray was replaced. The interior has too small tears (middle pad top and small tear on dash which is completely hidden by dash top cover). Photos will follow soon. Seats are perfect and free of tears. What price will bring a quick and fair to all sale? I'm thinking of asking for $8000 for the whole package. Car is in NJ local pickup only. |

Well, being out in CA and not being able to come check it out in person I'd say it is a fair position to take. It is very straight and have no major rust issues. Not a car one to restore to concours condition but a good start for a 6 or 8 conversion.

I got mine with two sets of alloy wheels, no rust, running perfect for $2K. He threw in a set of axles with all the CV joints, new turn signal lenses, a console with all the guages, various relays and switches in a box and a set of 2.0 US cylinders/pistons for a $100, so yeah, I would be reluctant to part with 4 times that amount to not have to redo the seats.
Not to be a jerk, but I think you are a bit on the high side, but I don't know what rustfree goes for on the East coast.

prices are double on the East Coast vs the West Coast but it seems to me more like $6000 would be a fair price.
engine parts in a box are worth pennies on the dollar as all of them are considered "cores" as to verify them takes tons of time. These parts are just a throw in to the car.

I'm not the least offended by Tobra's estimate and I agree with Bleyseng on the parts bit about them being core values. However, 914 on the east coast are much rarer and ones in my condition of "rustiness or more appropriately rust-free-ness" are quite valuable. The 2.0L engine "core" is not really a core anymore. I've taken it all down to the crank and split case, heads have been professionally rebuilt and ready for reassembly, new pistons/cylinder/rings/wrist pins from Mahle Euro compression 2.0L set ($600), oil pump new and the OEM is also reusable), 4 new 2.0L fuel injectors, new bearings and ARP rod bolts installed and refurbished ready for assembly, new OEM camshaft with the correct size intermediate gear, etc, basically everything needed to assemble a super 2.0L stock engine with mostly new parts (worth so far $2500 in core plus new parts bought at discount pricing, not including about $500 in professional refurbishment costs so far). So if I can sell the whole car plus this potential new engine for $6000 then I'm really asking only $3000 for the 1.8L car.
