Type IV Engine Builders?
I've got a 2.0 type IV 914 engine sitting in my garage that I was thinking of putting into my 69 VW bug. My idea is to rebuild it first. I'd like to use the stock crank, rods, pistons and cylinders. What's the most I can do with compression ratio, head work, intake and exhaust for a somewhat reliable street engine?
Thanks- Craig Backer |

Could be a Big Deal
Putting a Type IV could be a big deal - or not. The head guru on Type IVs is Jake Raby at Air Cooled Technology. http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/
The forum you need is http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewforum.php?f=1. These guys are building some mega horsepower Type IVs. I'm building a Type IV for my Super Vee. Plan on spending a lot more money on this than you spend on your Beetle. The secret with these motors is in the cylinder heads. Just write a big check. The Type IV - Beetle thing has been done a lot. Check with Jake. Richard Newton |

You need to change the cam/lifters out and go to carbs or modern FI. The hot setup is to locate a Mexibettle FI setup and switch to a better ECU.
You can get in the 120-130hp range but you will need a DTM fan setup to cool it as the stock pancake fan won't work in a bug. The torque will blow your mind vs a type 1 motor.

I rebuilt a few of these years ago while going to college so I'm fairly familiar with them.
I guesss what I was curious on was the limits of the stock internals (crank, rods, p&c's). Will they hold up to a big cam, high compression and worked heads with matched intake and exhaust? I guess I'll jump over over shoptalkforums for a possible recipe. Thanks- Craig Backer |

Yes it will stand up to a ton of abuse.
I am running big cam high compression 8.2:1 (ok so it's not high) ported and polished heads with header and 40 IDF's on stock rods and crank and Pistons. I rev the living crap out of the motor at Autocrosses and road course lapping days. routinely shift over 6000 RPM when racing. Drive 200 miles one way to events. every other week. |

Craig, I'm here and can make this project simple and effective..
The integrity of the stock internals are great, what is most important is the engine combination that you use and thats my specialty. The Type 4 conversion is virtually ALL I do... I have a combination that can make 135 HP with a flat torque curve that uses all stock internals, just an optimized cam, CR and head package are the keys.. I turn stock cranks near 9,000 RPM and they can hold 400+HP.. "Its all in the combo"
