Popping Out of Second Gear?

Took a look at a '73 2.0 for sale. Drove it once a few weeks ago and it didn't have a problem shifting into second gear, then the owner replaced the clutch cable, since it broke. Now it's difficult to get it into second gear. Sometimes it's just barely in second but pops out easily upon accelerations. Slides easily into all other gears.

Could the change of the clutch cable somehow misaligned shift linkage? Wouldn't think so. What else could be the problem?

not to sure what the problem could be, but I bought my 914 with a damaged 4th gear. Symptoms included difficulty in getting the gear in and it woudl only stay in 4th under power. Once you release the gas it would pop out of gear.

so I rebuilt the tranny - the synchro ring and slider were burned and the dog tooth gear was also worn badly. I replace the full gear set on 4th, and just the ring and dogtooth on the rest. Tranny has been working wonderfully since. If you have the correct tools and are good with precision assembly, tranny rebuilds are easy.

Well, I bought the '73, so guess I gotta repair the second gear. I'm very good with precision assembly, but have never rebuilt a transmission before. What tools do I need? I have a disassembled gearbox that needs to be put back together. Maybe I should practice on that one, before I take apart the one with the bad second gear.

Does the transmission have to be removed from the car to replace the second gear synchro, slider, ring, etc...?

Wow. Thanks guys! Think I'll write my own article after I go through this process. Redbeard's article looks great. There's an article from Bondo? mentioned in the 914Club "many parts in a 901" thread. Anyone know where this Bondo article is? What's the best manual to guide in assembly/disassembly of the 901 gearbox?
