i'm having issues getting the hose that connects to the front of the impellor housing to stay on. anybody got any suggestions on how to get it there?
second, my throttle linkage from the pedal through the floorboard keeps popping off any time i go past about 3/4 throttle. one thing i was thinking about doing was drilling a hole through the end of the rod and the piece it connects to (dont know what its called) and sliding a bolt through there. think that will work? if not, anybody have any suggestions? BTW, the car is a 1974 1.8

I don't know of a hose that connects to the front of the impeller housing. Can you describe in more detail just where it connects?
When you press the throttle pedal, it pushes a pushrod that in turns moves a bellcrank. It sounds like you're saying the rod pops off of the bellcrank? I wouldn't bolt this; I think it uses a ball-joint for a reason. I'm trying to remember if there is a plastic bushing in the pushrod or not. If not, you may need to figure out which part is wearing--the ball, the socket, or both. And repair whichever one is worn. If there is a bushing there, just replace that and all should be well. --DD

the hose connects to the front of the fan housing towards the top at the very front of the engine. the place where it connects is just a little nipple that sticks out of the housing

Dave, do you think he is talking about the booster fan? That's the only thing I can think of. And as far a bolting it goes, don't. It will bind the rod. You may need to replace the rod end though, and if you cannot get the parts anymore, I would suggest a standard rod end like you would use on any other linkage, but of course this would entail some machining and fabrication.

Were does the other end of the hose attach?
If I remember right there isn't a bushing connecting the socket to the ball.The socket has spring metal thet snaps around the ball. You might try sqeezing the end of the socket to tighten it around the ball

sounds like he's talking about the hose to the charcoal canister...
if it is, and if it were me, i'd put a hose clamp on it

I know of a couple of places that they put the charcoal cannister hoses. One is sticking out the side of the fan shroud, the other is sticking out of the engine tin on the side. This fitting pushes air into the charcoal cannister; on 70-early 74 cars this air goes through the lines on the left side of the car.
A new hose should grip pretty well. Is this an old and brittle hose? If so, you might want to replace it just because. It's not a part of the FI system, so it won't really affect the driveability of the car, but it's good not to have old hoses on the car regardless. --DD

I had my gas pedal popping loose also.
From the back of the pedal is a rod that has a ball joint at the end. The ball joint pops over a ball that is on a roughly triangular plate. The lower corner of the triangle has a rod that goes through a bushing in the pedal cluster. The throttle cable attaches to a short arm coming from the plate. What happened to mine was that the rod or bushing got so worn that the pedal and triangular plate could move a lot left or right. If I pushed it too far to the right, the rod from the back of the pedal would bear against that compressed cardboard floorboard and pop the socket off the ball. For now, I removed the floorboard and widened the slot behind the pedal. What I need to do is remove the pedal cluster and fix that bushing. |
