901 questions
Hello, I have a 67 912 with a 5-spd 901 tranny. I want to change the gearing on
3rd, 4th, & 5th gear (to lower rpm). I have read that this can be done with stock 914 gears (the 914 901 tranny was designed for the type 4 motor vs the 616 motor in the 912). My question is this: in my quest for a 914 gearbox to cannibalize, does it matter if the tranny is a side or tail shifter? Does the year matter? Thanks all for reading and any input is greatly appreciated. BTW, if anyone already has the 3 gears and willing to sell, please pm me. John |

All of the four-cylinder 914 transmissions were geared the same.
The 914-6 had different 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gear from the 914-4. The 4th gears of both were the same. The 2nd and 3rd of the Six was taller than that of the Four, while the 5th gear of the Six was shorter than that of the Four. According to here the ratios from all of the four-cylinder cars were: 1st: 11:34 2nd: 18:34 3rd: 23:29 4th: 27:25 5th: 31:22 Not sure how that compares with the ratios in your 912. --DD

gearing
A common 912 third-fifth geaar set up is:
M 3rd gear S 4th gear X 5th gear All somewhat lower than the 911's of the same years. Concept remained the same for these boxes and 914 vs 9146 boxes, that is, lower gear ratios for the lower powered vehicles so that the gearing makes up for the lower HP and torque. |
