Electrical Wiring Diagrams

I am in the process of re-wiring (because I can). Am going to install the fuse conversion kit (see previous thread). Oh, by the way I have a 1974 914 1.8 converted to dual Weber 40'S.

My problem is reading the iffy electrical diagrams. Take for example current tracks 29 through 39. Have no problem with the fuse designations but have problems with the numbers in small squares such as: 59, 4, 23, 16. Also current track 30--Gray wire from K on Ignition to fuse 7; after the fuse the splits gray to #59, black/blue wire to "E20 Instrument panel illumination potentiometer". is there such a thing?

Where does the Black/Blue connect, it says 58a but where does it go after that?

Is there a BETTER set of wiring diagrams available?

Those mean "continued at the yellow box on track number XX".

That's actually track #33, not 30. E20, the potentiometer, is actually a part of the headlight switch. When you twist the knob on the switch, the instrument lights are supposed to dim or get brighter.

If you're talking about the wire from the potentiometer, the small "58a" that is not in a yellow box means that the wires are connected to a pin that is labeled "58a" on the component (the headlight switch in this case). There are four wires connected to this terminal (they would usually all be crimped into the same connector).

One wire goes to pin 58 on component E3, which is the emergency flasher switch. One wire goes to component L21, which is the light inside the "DEFROST" gizmo next to the heater control lever on the center tunnel. A third wire goes to two L6es, one L7, and two L26es--two speedo illumination lights, one combo gauge illumination light, and two tach illumination lights. The final wire is continued on track #4, where it connects to three L16s, which are the lights in the heater/fresh air control assembly.

Not really; these are the factory diagrams which are pretty much the last word. You can use the 1973 wiring diagram, but remember that the 73 wiring was not quite the same as the 74 wiring. I personally prefer the 74+ diagrams, as I think they more clearly show the electrical connections of the parts (though the actual locations of the parts are much less obvious).

You can make your own diagrams, too, of course! If you're up to rewiring the car completely, you should be able to make a diagram that works better for you.
