"Honorary Low-Rider"
Wayne's post about his 914 being an "honorary low-rider" (see the "which shocks do you like" thread) reminded me of a good story that Jim Pasha told me.
One day a number of years ago, Jim was driving his 914-6 back from an autocross. Since this was a race-prepped 914, it was not exactly a really tall car. Short tires, lowered suspension, the whole works. As he drove along the freeway, he pulled up alongside a "chopped Chebby". Flashy paint job, little tiny chrome wheels, dingle-balls hanging from the windshield--the whole nine yards. The driver of that car sped up to keep pace with Jim and check his car out. Evidently he was jealous of what he saw--"Hey, man--that theeng is really low!!" Now, this particular Chebbie was equipped with one of those boing-boing-boing hydraulic suspensions. The driver decided to see if his trick low-rider could match the ride height of the 914. So UP it went into the air, and then BANG! Down onto the pavement. Nope, not low enough. So UP again, and BANG! Every time the low-rider went down, something underneat the car dragged on the pavement, shooting out sparks! After a few tries, the driver evidently decided that the 914 was lower than his car could ever be. He gave up, waved at Jim, and let Jim pull away. Jim told me that by this point he was laughing so hard, he was crying!! --DD |
