Post 914 Seat Fabric Options

Looking for examples of factory seat options. I'm in the process of researching reupholstering of my stock seats. I currently have the basket weave stuff but want to see what other factory alternatives there were. I know there were a bunch of funky fabric options, right?

Only really interested in factory examples, but if you think your non-factory stock seats upholstering is way cool, please do show and tell.

Please supply photo of your example, if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Years ago I had a local guy redo my interior with custom fabric and vinyl. I get lots of positive comments on it. Go to http://www.dublerfamily.com and then follow the link to the 914 pictures.

I had a buddy re-do mine in black leather (the side bolsters and headrest) and dark grey basketweave-pattern cloth (the lower and rear cushion). The leather is simply because it's leather. The cloth is so that I don't fry myself getting into the car after it's been in the sun. No pics handy right now, I'm afraid.

Brett Johnson's 914 "Restorer's Guide" lists the interior options, year by year. From the 2nd-edition book:

1970: Brown, Tan, Black; ditto in Corduroy (for the cushions only); Black/Tan/White houndstooth pattern, Black/White houndstooth (cushions only)

71-74: Same options, except no Houndstooth patterns available.

75: Black, Buckskin, White; ditto in Corduroy (cushions only); Black seats with Tartan cushions in: Yellow, Green, Greenish-Yellow, Orange, Bright-Red, Burgundy-Red, Ski-Blue [sic], Matisse-Blue, Black/Grey. ["Tartan" is a plaid pattern.]

76: Same as 75, except fewer Tartan cushions: Yellow, Green, Orange, Bright-Red, Burgundy-Red, Black/Grey, Blue.

Go 916! The factory put "op-art" also known as "pasha" in the silver Peter Gregg (now AA) car - sort of looks like a distorted checker board. It was replaced by the grey Porsche "word" fabric after it was ruined in shipping. I have been trying to locate some at a decent price for a month or so. They also used it in some early 928's. Cool stuff - and technically "factory".

I'm not sure if it was factory or not, but it I've seen a red plaid fabric for the inserts in the seats. I thought it looked nice and kind of "broke up" the black interior. I've often wondered if anyone sells the stuff. Anyone else seen it???

See the list above under 75 and 76 cars. Yes, it may very well have been factory.

My 73 has corduroy inserts. Kind of cool.

BTW, I need to replace the entire seat upholstery in my car. Anyone know how difficult this is for a novice?

Try using the leather that is used in MBZ seats I saw a 914 that saw redone that way and the seats were good looking and comfy to sit on, plus it smelled great. Steve

Question

Does anybody have a sample of black corduroy seats they can post on this BBS? I would like to get an idea of what this looked like.

I would also like to know if corduroy fabric gets worn down quicker than the basketweave. Thanks.

Andrew
