Hey, all! I hope someone out there can help me. I've got a '73 1.7 with a fairly nice interior, OK body, and not all that much rust. It's currently running on about 2.5 cylinders, though. I can get my hands on a pretty decent 1.8 (from a '75, I think...), complete with FI, brain, catalytic converter, and muffler. My questions are:
Can I just bolt it right in? I know all the fours used the same tranny, so that won't be a problem, right? How 'bout the electical stuff - same wiring harness? Anything else I should know? Let me know ASAP either here OR directly to me at JazzMFK@aol.com. Thanks in advance for your help in getting another 'teener on the road as a daily driver! ------------------ MFK '73 914 1.7 |

It has a diferent fuel injection system and less horse power and smog stuff.....
It will fit and you will need to do some wiring changes. "I" would swap the injection system, if I really HAD to use that motor. Personally I would hold out for a 2.0 from the 73-74 model years. Or rebuild your old motor with larger barrels and pistons.... |

mikez: Thanks for your prompt reply. If I do find a (cheap!) 2.0, same questions: will it fit, what about the wiring harness, and will the tranny work? Thanks again. (And if you happen to know anyone giving away a nice 2.0, well, you now know whom to E-mail, right????)
Thanks again Quote:

If you get the complete FI from the 1.8, you should be able to plug it all in. Just make sure you get things like the dual relay (hanging off of the battery tray), the engine wiring harness, and so on. Make some notes of how the engine harness hooks up--in particular, the one plug on the relay board it uses.
I think that's about it, actually. You can use your 1.7's heat exchangers and muffler if you want to get rid of the stupid round-and-round-about 75-76 exhaust. If you do that, and the motor has the EGR plumbing and so on, you may have to disable that stuff. I'm not certain how that actually goes on a 1.8. --DD ------------------ http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

The 1.8L FI harness is completely different than the 1.7L FI harness, don't know about the other harnesses. The 1.7/1.8 engines use different ECU's, FI components and are not interchangeable.
Given that the implanted engine is a 75 1.8, the car would need t be smogged to the later 75 standard than the 74 regs if you are in a smog law state. |
