Belt Change interval

How often do you guys change your 914's alternator belt?

When it breaks. I used to carry a spare around for this very reason. They are cheap. Takes five minutes to change out. I reccommend you change the adjustment bolt from the allen head to a hex head before hand. They are a ***** if it strips.

Since the "fan belt" in our cars doesn't actually drive the fan, you're not going to toast your engine if it breaks. (Unlike in a Bug or a 911, for example.) So the only real consequence of it breaking is that your battery will not get charged--and the remains of the belt might be able to whip around and beat on things for a little bit before the belt is completely shredded (though I haven't actually heard of that happening).

So, yeah--"when it breaks". Or before a long trip where you won't feel like messing with it if it does break. Or at some major service point if it makes you feel more secure having a new belt.
