Odyssey PC680

Anyone using one in a 914?

I would love to see the picture of an install. I think I need a new battery.

Yes, a bunch of guys have 'em. Mine is mounted on its side on the stock battery box. Sorry, no pics handy but you mind find some with the search function. It is a nice battery - super light.

So you are using a PC680 on its side or the 925?

Mine is mounted in stock tray sideways. Works like a champ turning over my carbed six.

Not a great pic, but you can see some of the battery.

I bought a PC680 and a hold down clamp today.

I measured out and it should install just like yours, Granstfo.

I thought you had to use the metal jacketed battery in the engine bay. I guess you're making it with the plastic battery casing.

I got the hold down clamp yesterday. I also got the box for the battery.

Yes, only the box. The battery was stolen from the Fed Ex package. So I have to wait a few days for them to send another battery out.

Mine is mounted like Grant's but with the metal jacket and fully-enclosed bracket. Most race GCR's just want a metal strap across the entire battery and some decent covering over the electrodes & exposed cable-ends.

Chris,

I have that setup as well. Maybe I'll be able to install it this weekend.

I'll try to get a weight difference for the thread as well.

The PC680 in a nice weight saving device....plus, you can put it anywhere. I round filed the battery support years ago. That opened up the engine room quite nicely....important to me as I go there ferquently.
If one bundles the 4 red wires into one #10 you can run that back into the trunk. The rest of the wires fit. I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to weight loss, the battery support is 5-6 pounds of ugly fat. .....The top would fit back there if I had one. ...

What did you ground the battery to under the trunk?

How did you bundle the positive wires? I think I just need to get a large gauge wire to the starter and the rest to the car. I can actually pull the positive cables through to the trunk.

Can I get a shot of your engine bay where the old battery location is?

My hell hole looked worse than I thought. I could use some new metal.

I'm interested in putting the battery in the trunk. It would be out of the way, easy to service, and dry.

I moved my battery to the rear trunk last weekend. I was looking for a local supplier of the Odyssey battery and found that NAPA carries a version of it. I believe it's made by Olympus. It is a sealed gel cell battery so it can be mounted in any position. I ran a new heavy positive cable through my rear firewall and then installed a bolt in the firewall to ground to. I mounted the battery on its side so I would have plenty of room for my top. The whole thing took less than an hour.

An old pic, but you get the idea.
I wrapped the 4 red wires together, stuck them in a 3/16 ID copper tube (bout an inch long) one end and a #10 wire in the other, crimped & soldered....couple layers of shrink tube, & vinyl tape..IIRC..done.
Ran the ground to the trans ground on the underside of the trunk floor...handy spot.

Beauty, Mr. Stein. I think this is what I will do. I figured that you grounded it to the transmission.

BlueMM do you have any pictures?

I think I am holding on too close to this hold down clamp I bought. It won't fit the exact same spot that you put yours in. The feet of the clamp will have to go on the raised metal sections. Because the raised circle on the trunk floor, i can't seem to find an ideal spot for the battery.

Maybe I can put it on the firewall, but I would like to get it out of the engine compartment.

I am thinking about getting new battery I have done engine rebuild and battery tray changed.
Considering an Optima but interested in light weight like an Odyssey .
What is down side of having smaller size battery compare to reguler size heavy ones???

I don't think it is as good if you have a serious electrical system drain like a big sound system, but that is not really an issue for our cars.

It lasts longer overall. It can last longer between charges without losing voltage. It is clean and cannot leak battery acid onto your car.

Got off my duff this weekend.

The ground wire runs through a hole I drilled in the circular access panel. It is grounded with the transmission ground strap. I'll have to reroute the starter wire and splice and extend the main power wires.

What is the little plastic plug that is coming out of the positive wire harness? I'm guessing it was part of the original injection.

I plan on just redoing all the wiring and getting rid of all the superfluous stuff.

Here is a picture of the old ground wire. 35 years is probably a little passed the design life of the part.

The round thing is the fuel pump's power plug.

Seal that hacked-up engine shelf where the AC was. Your engine should be a little cooler once you do...
