Speedo question
A few weeks ago, I posted a question about the speedo needle being dead and the odometer and trip working...fixed...sorta...
Update to that with a new question... So, basically, I thought I just had the cable torqued on too tight at the gauge. I backed it off a bit and, bingo, it worked...for a while. What I've noticed is that now I have to barely screw in the speedo cable to get it to work...like just stuck in but not screwed in. Even the slightest bit of torque kills the needle. Everything works under those conditions, but is that a sign of a speedo cable going bad? Does the inner cable have some kind of stop that prevents it from entering the shaft too much? It's very weird, I know. Thanks in advance, Nec |

The inner cable does not have any kind of stop that I know of. You can tug on the end if you like... My guess would be that something in the speedo is binding up. See if you can contact another 914 person (or an early 911 owner, or maybe an early 944/924 owner) who will let you borrow their mechanical speedo for a few minutes. That should tell you if it's your speedo or not.
If not, the cable is definitely suspect. --DD
