I have got to get a smog check on my 74 VW Westy, I have a 2.0 914 engine with 44 Idf's it will not pass the visual inspection. I have a 1.8 that has 96mm pistons and a stock FI cam. Can I use the L-jet Fi from a 74 914? will the increase in displacment mess with the FI's ability to meter the fuel? I just need it to pass then I will put the 2.0 back in. should I replace the 96's with 93's or can I run it with the 96. Steve

I have heard (but haven't verified for myself) that the 1.8's L-jet can keep up with a 1910cc motor fairly well. I would venture to guess that it should be OK it idle and 2500 RPM, which are the two points you care about for the smog check. It might be a bit lean, but you can dink with the adjustment screw in the air flow meter to tweak that. You still may not have the mixture correct across the operating envelope, but I bet it'll be close enough to pass smog.
Run it and check the plugs to see what they have to say. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Years ago I put larger P/Cs on a FI bug and ended up with 1976 CCs and kept the stock FI system. I had to run the pressure high but it ran okay and when I got it smogged the tech was amazed it passed so well! Good luck.
