Bigger Rear Brakes?

Running my 914/3.2 at Willow today and blew out my rear caliper seals. Time to upgrade to something bigger. Suggestions? Running 944 Turbo brakes up front, 17" Fikses all around. Thanks.

What rear calipers are you running now? 914/4? Vented? How the heck do you blow out the caliper seals. I've never seen that on all the calipers I've rebuilt over the past 30 years.

Big question, do you need to keep the emergency brake?

Yes. Stock 914/4 brakes. Vented? You mean the brake itself or vents leading to the brakes?

How did it happen? I was running at 10/10's during a 30 minute run session, my fourth of the day, at Willow Springs, in close to 100 degree heat. I'm no mechanic so I have no idea how it happened except that I had no brake fluid in my system but plenty of brake fluid all over my drivers side real wheel. Anyways, June at Willow Springs is deadly.

The emergency brake is nice to have but I could lose it.

Thanks for your help.

I ran 3.2 Carerra brakes front and rear (calipers and rotors) on my 914. Had to give up the E-Brake, but, I USED these brakes and never used my e-brake so it was a pretty easy decision.

SC/Carerra rears would be my first choice.

I suppose you could hook up some 951s on the rear with some adaptors/spacers and a bias valve too.

Maybe 930 rears?

The 914/6 Gt ran widened 914/6 rear calipers with vented rotors. 914/6 calipers can use the 10mm spacers from a early 911 rear caliper, and with a slight modification 911 vented rear rotors 20mm can be used. The 14mm spacers from a Carrera rear caliper will allow a 24mm vented rotor. A couple of us also supply parts to convert a 914/4 caliper to fit vented 20mm rotors. As long as you have enough power, vented rotors are good at dissipating heat from braking. This worked well for at least 250 HP cars.

Are you useing a brake proportioning valve? I would think your brake bias is off without one. I would add SC or Carrera rear calipers and rotors. The SC are 20mm + the Carrera are 24mm rotors. Good heat dissapation with either.

Carrera calipers, vented rotors, brake bias valve, and no E-brake, seems like a good way to go. Thanks for the input.

You can have a e-brake with the big calipers.

I have 951 calipers all the way around on my 914 and I have a working park brake.

It just takes some imagination...... or just ask me how.

How do you check if you have an adjustable proportioning valve, a few hard stops then check tire temps, or just by premature front or rear lockup?

Hi Sandy,

I'll chime in here as well. You can setup the 914 rears with 986 monoblocks with 20mm wide standard 911 rear rotors. There is a way to setup an e-brake as well. I make the adapters for the rear setup and I'll be happy to help you through the conversion process. The 986 rears are very similar in piston/pad size to the 944T rears so that mix would balance out well.

that's what i run ...

'84 carrera calipers on all 4 corners with vented and crossdrilled rotors and a "T" instead of a bias valve ...
that, plus some good, agressive pads ...

brakes have plenty of stoppage and have never faded on me yet.

no e-brake (working on a 911 setup) ...

Andy
