914-6 conversion...changing oil w/Vellios tank?

I'm bringing back my new 914-6 conversion ('72 2.4 T) from the dead. Gotta change the oil. Unlike my 911, I do not see a drain plug on the Vellios tank. Do I remove the bottom hose or should I suck the oil out through the filler neck?

Probably either way would be fine. On a stock Six, you disconnect the lower oil line. If yours has a two-piece line, you can do the same. If not, sucking it out is probably the less messy way to go.

I have that tank on mine.

Crack the line at the oil cooler inlet. Wear disposable gloves.

Funny thing happened today. I stuck my "oil-sucker" into the tank and...nothing (I figured I would remove most of the oil from the top of the tank before opening the lower hose). It appears the tank is bone dry (car has been sitting for 3 years, but was running when parked). I placed my oil drain pan under the drain plug at the bottom of the motor and let 'er loose. SPLOOSH!! About 8 ~ 10 qts. of oil let loose.

??? Can oil "drain-down" to the sump over an extended period? Once again, this is a 2.4 "T" 911 motor in my 914.

Anyone care to guess the capacity of a 914-6 conversion with the Vellios tank?

I believe that the cars can drain down, but it's not something that happens over a "normal" amount of time.

IIRC, the Six oil system holds about 9 quarts. The Vellios should be similar.

Thanks again. One more question: Which oil filter? I'm assuming it would be the same as the 914/6, but...

I would assume that, but it's possible the fitting on the tank takes some other filter...

Mann, Mahle, or Knecht. NO FRAM ALLOWED!!!

I use Mahle on my '79, but I've read a lot of good on/off the forum about the Mobil1 synthetic media filter.

Maybe this may be off topic,But I have a orginal six and havent started it up for a while, Last time was Dec 2006,All of a sudden it seems to be leaking a lot more oil,Is that because all the oil has drained out of the tank into the engine ? I never thought of that.I know I should be driving it more.....
Thanks,914

The only time I did my own oil change on my non-factory/factory 914-6, most of the oil was drained when I removed the lower drain plug. I probably only got about a quart or two from the tank. This was after sitting for a few days.

Judging from the look under my car yesterday, I don't think I need to drain anything from the engine. It looks like about 9qts sitting on the car mat under it. ewww, whata mess. This should be fun.
