Post Starter problem

Hi all,
As I was trying to start my car today, when I turned the key, the starter cranked with a funny sound for 1 second and then died! (This happened after I came home from work and the engine was warm). Subsequent key turns produced nothing (just a slight click in the back). Then 5 minutes later I tried again and it started fine! I drove it around after that and started it 2 more times both were OK! What gives? Is the starter connected to any kind of relay? Should I replace the starter anyway (before it leaves me stranded)? Is it the igition switch?
Thanks

In stock form, there was no relay. It's a reasonably-popular modification, though.

I suggest going through Jim T's starter troubleshooting tech article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/mult_starter_diag/mult_starter_diag.htm
